The Friedsam Collection, The Met, NY________________________*Biography* (1609-1669) Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rign was born on 15th of July, 1606, in Leiden, the eigth of nine children of Harmen gerritszoon van Rign and his wife, Neeltje van Suijttbroeck. The only one of the children to study Latin.After seven years of school, Rembrandt entered the Philosophical Faculty of Leiden University to study Classics. Then a period of apprenticeship with the Italian- trained painter Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburgh. Although he was much more influenced by his studies with historical painter, Pieter Lastman. In 1925 19 year-old Rembrandt returned to Leiden to open his own studio.The arist died on 4 October, 1669 leaving the unfinished painting, Simeon with the Christ Child in the Temple.
