1893, Oil on canvasJean Delville: born in Louvain January 19, 1867 – 1953 . A Belgian symbolist painter, writer and mystic strongly influenced by Neoplatonism. He founded the Salon d’Art Idealiste, which is considered the Belgian equivalent to the Parisian Rose & Cross Salon and the Pre-Raphaelite movement in London.

1894, Oil on canvasIn 1885 Delville won the Prix de Rome in 1895, and was a professor at the Glasgow School of Art for a number of years in the early 20th century. He was an admirer of Italian Renaissance artists, particularly Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo. Delville emphasized content over form, preferring a mediocre painting of a spiritual thought to a great painting of a realist scene.
