About Me

MySpace LayoutsFrench painter Hippolyte Delaroche - he went by the name Paul - was born in Paris in 1797. He studied under landscape painter L.E. Watelet and later Baron Gros. Gros would influence Delaroche toward a style of historical painting which adhered to accuracy and was done in a highly finished academic style. Delaroche's paintings combined both Classicism and Romanticism, earning him the title of leader of the "juste milieu".Delaroche first gained notoriety with his at the Paris Salon exhibit of Joan of Arc in Prison in 1824 and contributed The Death of Duranti to the decoration of the Louvre's Musée Charles X. His most important work is considered the 1837 commission of his Hemicyle mural for École des Beaux-Arts and he was the youngest artist to be elected to Institute National des Sciences et des Arts at the age of 35. Paul Delaroche also was a teacher, among his pupils was Jean Léon Gérôme.
