But we are not gone! Don't give up on us. While we will likely be relatively quiet in 2008, we will triumphantly return with a new program, new projects and (probably) a new name in 2009.We may be doing some small side projects during the year, and will certainly be having some social get togethers, so please still keep informed. Send messages or questions to [email protected] goal is to create a program that will help you help make Salem (and the world) a better place, to connect you with others with the same goals, and to enliven the world around us. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING US WITH OUR REINVENTION please contact us at the above e-mail asap.We live in a world of growing superficiality and apathy. Relationships, connections in the community, responsibility to each other, even friendships…hell even our own personal relationship to ourselves and our lives. We live in a culture of “the surface.†We all agree that bigotry and racism, homophobia and xenophobia, are merely ignorance. But isn’t ignorance just people looking at another person on a superficial level, and not looking deeper and closer at what is truly there? Isn’t apathy merely us being superficial toward our place in the world? Isn’t our superficiality towards our personal connections causing the growing divisions between us? By developing not just the “effect†(Actually doing service and projects) but also dealing with this cause of not looking deeper and LIVING deeper (which is where our internal programming comes in) we are dealing with the ROOTS of who we are. This isn’t some kind of stuffy or boring thing. We do not study life and the world academically. We get involved! We are not just talking about thinking deep, we actually strive to energetically, excitedly, whole heartedly LIVE DEEPWe must deepen our understanding of our selves and each other (multi-culturalism and personal challenge), we must deepen our thoughts, we must deepen our involvement with our community AND in the lives of those that are a part of that community. We must deepen our connections, and develop them so that the connections are not there merely in empathy or commiseration, but in support and solutions. We must stop taking ourselves so damned seriously, and be willing to go to the cutting edge and, yes, even be silly once and a while, because life is about more than “coolnessâ€. We must deepen our responsibilities as humans to our world and everything in it.LIVE DEEP. That is what we are about. EVERYTHING WE DO is about that. That is our philosophy. We stive to Live Deeper, and support others and well as work together with others who share that same mission.Be The Spark!
Culture Shock is a melting pot of diverse individuals seeking the common good through community involvement, improvement, and cultural interaction. We strive to capture the spark in us, and spread it, in any way we can. This is how we do that:
Be Experienced!
Instead of letting our differences divide us, why not embrace them? It’s not just that we have all kinds of people as members. What makes us one of the most unique community groups is that we are exploring our world in all four directions by actively seeking other cultural experiences. Imagine how interesting it is to see through someone else’s eyes for awhile.
Be Moved!
In Culture Shock, we “Find a Need, Fill a Need.†We, as a group, strive to bring a whole new meaning to “community service†by offering our support, spirit, and sass to the public. Our desire is to see a truly energized, connected, and cooperative community.
Be the Change! We also believe that to be a part of a community means that we have a responsibility to help it in any way we can. We believe that together we can be a true positive change in the world.Be Interested!
We believe boring people rarely change the world. We are a group of open-minded and incredibly spirited individuals who bring social awareness to the table, and we have a heck of a good time doing it. So pull up a chair, join the fun, and share your creativity.
Be Creative!
We challenge apathy, shift perspectives, and think anew. We have a strong desire to venture outside our comfort zones and challenge ourselves to try the new and the different. We endeavor to do, think, and look at every thing creatively, letting our hair down and laughing openly. We connect with everything we can.
Be Connected!
We seek to connect to one another in an ever-disconnected world. In an interactive, meaningful, and fun environment, we create kinships between unlikely partners. So how do we do it? By putting all the pieces together.
In the end, there are three kinds of people in the world. People who wonder what happened, people who watch what happened, and people who make things happen. Which one will you be?
