About Me
I woke this morning and I said, “If there was only a way I could be forced to be incredibly self-absorbed and talk about myself.†Then I realized that I got to write this profile. And it’s quite the dilemma. Talk yourself up, and you’re arrogant. Talk yourself down, and your emo. Talk yourself sideways, and I guess you’re in the Flaming Lips. Either way, you can’t win. But because MySpace is all about catching up with old friends AND meeting new ones, self-absorb I must. But I do this for you.
I know that nobody reads anymore, and I have a habit of writing many words, so this should be a futile test of wills…but here goes:
Simple history: My name is Ryan. I’m in my late 20s of the maleish persuasion. I am Scottish and Welch by heritage. I currently reside in the lush, green forests of Phoenix-Metro, Arizona. I grew up here, escaped….or rather, moved, to Los Angeles for a few years, had a nice time, and the moved to Oregon, where I fell in love with the most wonderful state in the Union. Then, for reasons not entirely clear to me, I moved back to my childhood home of Arizona, where I live now…in the East-Valley, to be more specific. Needless to say, I am very eager to return to my beloved Oregon.
I’m a graduate of Willamette University, in Salem, OR. I have a degree in politics, which means that I spend a lot of time yelling about the troubles of the world, and generally being ignored. I tend to be pretty liberal, and by that, I mean that I am currently both flaming and bleeding directly from my heart. I, apparently, do not love this country (I actually do), hate God (not really, though he still owes me $20), am trying tear down the US (which I am not, but I’m also not willing to boost it on the backs of other countries), want to burn the flag (I actually love the flag, but think it’s my right if I choose, to burn it however I want…assuming it is not in the middle of a dry forest.), want to kill and eat babies (no-comment) and am a Communist (humanist, actually). In all seriousness, I believe that we, as humans, have a responsibility to behave a certain way towards one another, that we are all interconnected and that this built-in community that we represent requires us to behave a certain way. Simple as that. I am a TIRELESS advocate for community issues, equality, unity, human rights, and social change. I tend to zig when people expect me to zog. (See, you expected me to say zag.) I also live for community involvement, volunteering, and social consciousness. Oh, and I do believe in “the revolutionâ€, though I think it is a quiet, thoughtful revolution that is most needed. Ah yes, and I’m a HOOT at parties.
Apart from the other “work†that I do, which is far too boring to even speak of, I founded an run a non-profit group called The Culture Shock Community Project. (It’s in my top friends list if you are interested). What’s it about? Well, I believe in bringing people together, and creating a movement of action and involvement. It’s not just about making the “world a better place†but actually being deeply connected to our community, each other, and ourselves. Our four pillars are: Live Deep / Do Good / Engage / Unite. But we do it with direct, passionate action, not intellectual or ineffectual discussion. It’s honestly pretty damned awesome, and I’m very proud of it (though it is an endless and sometimes grueling experience trying to start up a National non-profit org.)
But enough of that crap.
I love to write (though I don’t make enough time to write very often), love to play and perform music (my music page is also on my top friends, if you are curious), am an amateur photographer (which again means that I don’t do it nearly often enough). I’ve also recently started making short videos, which is something I used to do years ago, and have rediscovered a love for it. And, as you can well imagine, I make lots and lots of porn. Just tons of it. I’m like the Arizona kingpin or hardcore porn. You know, when I’m not doing all that other stuff. I also try to be as pretentious as possible, as often as possible.
I am very open-minded, love to hear new ideas and perspectives, like discussions and even debate. I will willingly, openly, and happily listen to everything you have to say, and then quickly discount it as silliness. Because, I mean, c’mon
I am a big music and film fan. I have collected over 3,000 CDs (until recently. I just decided to sell my whole collection off in a kind of personal revelation thing) While I am picky about the music I like, I really love nearly every genre. While I’m sure you can guess I’m into the classic rock, garage rock, proto-punk sound, I also adore underground and socially conscious hip-hop, bluegrass, folk. I’m an old-school film-junkie, though I have had to cut back a bit because of my sched. I grew up with ADD, so when I was young I hated reading, but I have made up for it in my adult years by devouring books (especially nonfiction). I am also very much into magazines, non sustainable though that is (Ode, Good, Utne, Mental_Floss) I have a penchant for collecting pin-backs and magnets.
Lastly (THANK GOD), I guess philosophically I tend to take things very seriously, and not seriously at all at the same time. That is to say that I tend not to mess about with the important things, but also don’t get hung up on a lot of the things that tend to create so much drama in other people. I believe in some kind of universal design, but I also don’t think that humans are tuned in enough to know it (or even have the capacity to know it) so why fight? I try to keep a positive attitude about most things, though I also enjoy ranting, but usually that is for comedic value. Spritually I am, more or less, Existentialist and Taoist, though I have beliefs gathered from many religious AND secular corners. I have some controversial parts of my personality and life, but my mom reads this, so you’ll just have to ask me directly. I’m a saint and a sinner. A righteous and wicked man. A contradiction in unity.
And most of all, I write too God-damned much.
