About Me

I have a great love of family and friends. I spend a lot of my time celebrating life. Believe me this is not a frivolous thing as I am currently convalescing from a battle with stage 4-breast cancer. Life can be an unforgiving and perilous journey yet the rewards of its passage are bountiful. I have wonderful people in my life who see that all my basic needs are met. There is a joy deep in my heart that sings triumphantly and no one can take it away.

My children have provided me with a place where I can do all the things I love. I am a photographer trained both in fine arts and commercial photography. I also love writing poetry and have managed to keep a journal, which will be released on October 1, 2007. What a wonder that God has blessed me with the ability to pull what I love together with a purpose during this time.

The book is scheduled to release October 1, 2007. Pre-orders can be made directly from the publisher by clicking on the link below, "Order Yours Today".

During my battle and while our roles were flipped, the children and I, I learned a great many things from them. I suppose the greatest thing they taught me is this: They do not falter when called on for help. I love them. All of them, the three I gave birth to and the children belonging to my ex-husband and their mother Malika.
Malika, you have raised beautiful children, thank-you.

Kicking it with my sister Ree, my nephew Dan and cousin Van and their families.
Look at me, I have some hair now. When I get these glasses off my face and some eyebrows, oh lookout world!!

I'd like to meet:

I would love the opportunity to meet all my grand and great grandparents. I am the historian for both my maternal and paternal families. It would be a pleasure beyond belief to hear their stories.

Jeanne Gray, Author of Dumb Things People Say and At the Bus Stop.

The best friends on MySpace, and anywhere in the world for that matter, can be found on my list. I thank you all for your messages, comments, blogs and prayers. It is one of the greatest feeling to know that no matter what happens, someone has got your back. Someone is rooting you on and if by any chance you fall short, someone will be pulling you across the finish line. Please continue to pray for me as I grow in strength and I promise I will keep my eye on the prize. HEALTH, oh glorious HEALTH. Love you all!!! deb

Music:

MY MUSIC is one of my greatest loves!! Excluding family it plays second fiddle only to my photography and God has blessed with the ability to combine the two.

Daddy, you are the melody that plays in my heart like theme music.

Thank you for exposing me to the wonderment of the Lord and those beautiful negroid spirituals.

Movies:

The Color Purple, The Blue Lagoon, The Boy With Green Hair, White Nights and Crimson Tides. A good movie is like a good man, colorful.

Television:

The 4400, The Closer and Reruns of Will and Grace

Books:

Forgive me, but I have been off the literary loop for a while reading solely for medical purposes during my bout with cancer. However, these books I found to be good reading. The Breast Cancer Survival Guide, by John Link, M.D. and The Invisible Scar, by Mimi Greenberg, Ph.D.

I would be remissed not to add at this point, that Candace has touch the hearts of many, including the heart of my grand-daughter Nya...who has submitted a poem in her honor. Nya, at nine years old is the youngest poet who will be published in this body of works.

THE PASSION WITHIN

Heroes:

Ree Truby, my sister, she found my breast cancer and referred me to Long Beach MemorialCare Breast Center. It was there that a team of doctors were put together to save my life. Dr. John Link, Dr. Tomi Evans, Dr Marcel Daniels and Dr. Gretchen M. Stipec are my medical heroes. My children and my sisters are my heroines and the loves of my life.
My sister Fran, what can I say about you that would do you justice. You have been my emotional rock and I want to say thank you for all of your support. I simply love you.
Marla, my baby, my road dawg...life with you has been amazing. Combing the globe with you and the girls have made life so complete. If I have to leave you the one thing I want you to know is that you have made my life worth living.
...And my Grand-baby, my greatest HEROINE of all.
The day your mother was born my life forever changed, That day marked a new beginning and the promise of longevity. On that day my future became my focus, A new and bright future was on the horizon and I could almost taste your existence. You are a bright, intelligent and beautiful child...I am honored to have been granted the privilege of being your grandmother. I hope to spend many summers with you to see you succeed and fulfill your dreams. Perhaps marry and present me with a great-grand child, but for now I simply want you to know you are loved.
My big sister Dorothy...a tribute:
Thanks for teaching us all...what love truly is all about!!
