About Me

NEWS 16/08/06

Lekan Babalola is now confirmed on the Cassandra Wilson tour starting from October 29th to November 27th 2006.

Lekan Babalola is one of the most extraordinary percussionists in jazz and world music today. He started his career playing in the Yoruba christian church owned by his father, Olayiwola Babalola. As his skills as a master percussionist grew, he was invited to join Gasperlawal in 1980. His career continues with performances with the likes of Fela Kuti, Ernest Ranglin, Roy Ayers, Tony Allen, Branford Marsalis. Pinse Saul, Queen Salawa, Abeni, Axelle Red, Kllb Band, Bola Are, Jean Toussaint, Tessa Souter.

Songs of Icon is an unique recording that draws its musical influences and inspiration from Santeria, an Afrocuban version of 'IFA'. The album will be a double CD featuring remixes of most of the original songs by the top names in the broken beat/ leftfield scene. Thus targeting the world music and dance markets. Remixers include: Mark de Clive Lowe, Afronaut, Misa Negra, IG Culture and Le Pico.

Releases to Date:

1st single from the songs of icon album was OYA which was very well received. Licensed to the Universal Afrobeat compilation. This was the introduction to the project.

2nd single was ASOKERE remixed by IG Culture. HMV broken beat single of the week and was an anthem on the scene. It will feature on Africanism Vol 3 and released through Defected in the UK. Also licensed to Gilles Peterson's worldwide compilation released in spring 2005.

3rd single was OBAS AWON OBA remixed by Afronaut vs Misa Negra (for BUGZ IN THE ATTIC).

4th and final single KABIOYE feats remixes by Mark De Clive-Lowe and Phil Asher. Guaranteed smash and another Co-op favourite.
