About Me

...awakening imaginations through dance, music, and the visual arts...Salamanda Tandem is a UK based dance / music ensemble established in 1989, and produces bespoke, contemporary, multi media art events. These can include; performances in unusual spaces; visual/sound installations; and creative environments, where the audience can choose to observe or become part of the artwork itself. Its work tours regionally, nationally and internationally, developing audiences through access to high quality art works, training in creativity, and participation.. As you've probably realised ...on reading our blog etc that we're also keen yoga practicioners - yoga helps us to stay fit mentally and physically.

Band Members: salamanda tandem is an artist-led company that nurtures collaboratons between artists and audiences. Principally, we're dedicated to making dance and music performance, but we also work with poets , sculptors, painters and many others artists who are fundamental to our daily work. This year is our 20 year birthday!! and yet it feels like we have fresh eyes to view the creative process. Since 1994 we've been strategically funded by Arts Council East Midlands and are grateful for their support - without which we couldn't survive. ............................................................ ...................................... We collaborate very widely as a group of dancers, musicians and visual artists with artists in Nottingham, around the UK, in Hungary, Germany, America, Japan, China and Australia - expanding and contracting according to what our creative output demands and the resourses we have. We're always open to new collaborations. .................................................... The first 3 sound tracks playing on this site are from our latest album Corrosion which derived from a commision given to our director Isabel Jones by Opera North, UK in 2003. The music for the album is co-composed by Isabel Jones and Duncan Chapman with texts by poet; Tony Baker and the CD mastered by Dallas Simpson. Isabel, Duncan and Tony have collaborated together for 15 years through salamanda tandem. To order aa CD or book the live show; send an email to [email protected]. In Isabel's original concept for Corrosion she brought together 5 other singers, sculptor Gerard Renvez and Duncan to make an installation and live performance within it for the Bonnington Art Gallery. ............................................................ .......................... The Fourth sound track on this site is called Motet and is from Triptych a 1 1/2 hour voice/ dance /sculpture performance by salamanda tandem which toured cathedrals - the motet was researched by Vivien Ellis and is sung here by Vivien, Isabel and Moira Smiley, the image is of Maria Fuk Law a dancer in Triptych. ............................................................ ................................... The Fifth is an excert from Isabel and Duncan's Dark January's project - a concept dreamed up by Isabel on the break up of ensemble 8 ............................................................ .................................... The last track is a spontaneous song by Gwilym Jones and Isabel Jones - an improvisation inspired by a book on the shelf. ............................................................ .................................. Salamanda Tandem was founded and is directed by Composer/singer /choreographer/dancer: Isabel Jones. We also work with a number of freelance curators / project managers who help run the company; Kevin Hodgetts: Curator/Arts Development, Richard Hughes: designer, Esther Harris PR, Geoffrey Fielding: IT. In 2008, after 14 years with us, Lisa Craddock left the company to join The Foundation for Community Dance - we're grateful for her years of support for us. Importantly we have a strong and vibrant group of board members from education, arts and disability fields who take an active role in guiding the company; including Chair Stella Coloutbanis ( curator), company secretary: Lyn Watson ( management accountant). The images above document a site specific duet between 2 performers; one vison impaired, and the other sighted, where they use touch and sonic vibration to navigate an old orangery in the 18th century mansion of Bretton Hall in yorkshire. This sort of work has held an ongoing fascination since the very early days of salamanda tandem and even before ....... interesting sites, sensory ways of exploring them, mutual exchange, transformative processes and people with different perceptions. We also like conversation so do follow us on twitter
