I am a saxophonist, composer and teacher. Based in London, I work predominantly in the jazz field, and new music is my main focus. I also enjoy playing in a variety of styles, from 20's jazz through bebop, fusion and free jazz to salsa and dance. In addition to jazz, I'm inspired by classical composers such as Debussy, Bartok and John Adams, and classical Indian music.
After studying for an MA at Oxford University and a post-graduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music, I was invited to study with David Liebman in New York. I then toured the UK with my own group, playing at most of the main jazz venues and also extensively abroad. I compose for many of the groups I perform with, and have also written for film. I've recorded many CDs with a number of bands, as well as doing TV, film, and pop sessions and performing live on BBC TV and radio. I enjoy teaching as well as playing and my series of play-along books is published by Spartan Press. I also offer private and group tuition.
I practice yoga and meditation and try to apply my experiences to performing. To really 'be' at one with the music that you're creating, to focus completely on the music while you're playing, is a difficult task, and I have found that the focus and concentration gained from yoga has helped me move at least some way towards this elusive goal.
"Carlos plays with a sound that comes from his soul" - David Liebman

  • Influences: I'd like to say everyone really... whatever we're exposed to goes in at some level, for better or worse. For myself, the following are the people I've listened to most, and in some cases studied with, though in some ways it's all the people who I've played with regularly in different bands who've had just as big an influence.
Bela Bartok, Billy Strayhorn, Bjork, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea, Charlie Haden, Chris Potter, Christine Tobin, Dave Holland, David Binney, David Liebman, Django Bates, F-IRE collective, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Iain Ballamy, Igor Stravinsky, Jaco Pastorius, Jan Garbarek, Joe Zawinul, John Adams, John Coltrane, John McLaughlin, John Taylor, Julian Arguelles, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Wheeler, Loose Tubes, Miles Davis, Partisans, Paul Simon, Pat Metheny, Perfect Houseplants, Prince, Radiohead, Rita Marcotulli, Saint Etienne, Stan Sulzmann, Steve Coleman, Steve Reich, Sting, Tim Garland, Wayne Krantz, Wayne Shorter, Weather Report, Zakir Hussein.
As far as the new project goes, I guess the influences are even broader as there are 5 of us, but when the tracks are up here (soon!), I'll let the music speak for itself...
