"THE VOICE OF A HOMESICK ANGEL"

About Me

Internationally-touring, ex-Adelaide songbird Abbie Cardwell's one helluva self-taught banjo pickin’, guitar slingin’, harmonica totin’ chick with "the voice of a homesick angel."
This Triple J Unearthed winner draws inspiration from life and the roots of all music. Soaking up her favourite moments of rock, folk, country, soul and blues Abbie creates what she has nicknamed as "Rootsy Toons".
Having grown up on a healthy diet of her Country Hall Of Fame inductee father’s JJ Cale, Rickie Lee Jones, Tom Waits and Tony Joe White Records Abbie manages to condense those influences into her own style with an emphasis on the up-close-and-intimate side of ‘laid-back’.
Unsurprisingly, for someone who grew up across Australia/Singapore/England, travelling was always going to be a part of Abbie’s musical career. To date, she’s toured Germany in support of Dire Strait’s David Knopfler and opened the stage for many greats like Steve Earle and hero Tony Joe White.
Abbie has taken her music around the United States and was the winner in the BMI, USA Song Competition 2004 held on Kauai, Hawaii amongst other things. She set up shop in Atlanta, Georgia for about five months after winning the BMI Song Comp where she worked with producer Butch Walker (of Avril Lavigne and The Donnas fame) and, in a beautiful twist of fate (long story… ask her about it), managed to land the mixing services of Nick Didia (Bruce Springsteen, Powderfinger, Rage Against The Machine etc) - also known as Brendan O’Brien’s number one engineer.
On a home-base level, Abbie has been a Triple J Unearthed winner and recipient of the ABC Dig Radio award. For her latest album, Abbie secured the services of her golden fingered, six-stringing older brother Jeb, double bass work of Andy Albanis, tub thumping of acclaimed drummer Ashley Davies (of Matt Walker fame) and special guest Bedge (Bernard Fanning band).
Her inimitable style has been lapped up at festivals such as Womadelaide, The East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and many more.
This is roots music from the heart!

ALBUM REVIEWS:

"Abbie Cardwell shows that she's the real deal on her new record. Think Lucinda williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Sheryl Crow and Ryan Adams.
The album opens with a song called 3AM, and this is the perfect late-night track - simple and direct, but with a voice that aches. There's a rootsy cover of the Stones' Can't You Hear Me Knocking, but Abbie's sweet songwriting dominates proceedings, conveying both pain and pleasure.
Mixed by Nick Didia (Powderfinger, Bruce Springsteen), this is a world-class record.
2008 should be Cardwell's year."

JEFF JENKINS - MUSIC AUSTRALIA GUIDE/JB HI-FI MAG

Former Adelaide lass Abbie Cardwell definitely has talent and wisdom beyond her years. Her songs ignite with deep emotion and are performed with a raw passion.
This songbird is a folk-loving, jill of all trades. She writes, sings, plays banjo, guitar and harmonica – and don’t forget her acting ability.
The album has an organic quality, comforting like a country home.

CANDICE KELLER - THE ADVERTISER

"ABBIE IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SINGERS... LAID BACK, SOULFUL AND BREATH-TAKING, LIKE THE LADY HERSELF"
VICKI THORN - THE WAIFS

"If you’re up for a country mile’s travel down the brother sister folk/roots freeway, hang a left at Angus & Julia to arrive somewhere near Abbie and Jeb. Cardwell, that is. ... the spotlight is on Abbie and the results are impressive.
Within seconds this long player solidifies as suitable full player by setting your world to that of hers, a reservedly ebullient cool, countrified calm.
The artwork on By Hook or by Crook is a detailed, gatefold textured brown paper layout and with its overall design, musicianship and production; it’s the type of album you’d take home to your Mum. Or buy as a Christmas present... but play it a few times and you’ll end up keeping it.
Abbie Cardwell's newest CD "By Hook Or By Crook" is a masterpiece. Easily one of the year's ten best. It's a beautiful blend of folk, blues and country influenced songs that have been painstakingly crafted by a songwriter that is at the top of her game.
This album is a definite "Must Have".
