Minneapolis rockers Gabriel and the Apocalypse is ready to bring down the Armageddon of rock. Take the name seriously … and then get ready for a good time. Each song by Gabriel and the Apocalypse is tailor-made to strike a chord with the listener, and each song is unique, with its own purpose, its own emotional resonance, its own intensity. “There is a separate emotion for every song.” Each song should have its own personality; that work ethic stands behind the artistry of Gabriel and the Apocalypse and reveals the reason why the group’s music shines with such excellence. Such focus on individual songs pushes a band towards quality and away from the state of being a song factory that cranks out one bland “hit” after another with no real artistic solidity in sight. In addition, these musicians are geared towards expressing a broad spectrum of human emotion in its songwriting. “We cover a wide range of intensities throughout our album.” Gabriel and the Apocalypse focuses on creating a journey, so that a CD is more than a mere collection of songs, but rather an experience, a rich musical world all its own.
Edge
Freshness comes from new ideas. New ideas shake off the doldrums of lackluster, derivative music. Originality is key to creating one’s own solid niche in the musical world. Longevity comes from doing something different and establishing a presence among fans that speaks of artistic integrity. “We want to have more of an edge to our music, and try new ideas.” Gabriel and the Apocalypse eschew complacency in the world of mainstream convention, seeking instead to break the shackles of “present-day radio formulas” and show audiences what music can really do in the hands of finely honed talent. “Realistically, no one will ever be surprised or inspired by hearing all these new bands that all use the same formula in their music. We want to be the band that generates a fresh sound and delivers unique artistic expression in our music.” Gabriel and the Apocalypse is all about breaking into the mainstream but not being or sounding mainstream. “Basically, we want to be able to take mainstream and add those artistic qualities that most bands that come out these days lack.”
Everyday Environment
For Gabriel and the Apocalypse, inspiration for a bright, fresh, original song can come from something mundane and everyday. “Anything in an everyday environment can inspire an idea.” It’s all about seeing something normal from a different angle. Same thing, new perspective. “Looking at the same things in different ways can always create a certain creative flow.”
Work
Music is fun and exciting, but it is also work – at least if you want the music to be as good as it possibly can be. A band can just crank out a song and move on to the next, but that goes back to the song factory aesthetic that Gabriel and the Apocalypse strives so hard to avoid. “We don’t hammer songs out just to get them done but rather wait until the right idea comes to finish a song.”
Band News
A new single, “Digital Theory of Revelation”, is nearly audience ready and will appear on a some compilation CDs. Work on the band’s next album, due next year, is under way. It’s all part of the effort to rectify what the band sees as wrong with today’s music culture. “Major record labels have messed up music for everyone; hopefully someday it will be good again.” Gabriel and the Apocalypse is currently working with A&R Select, the leading independent A&R firm in Hollywood, CA.
Review
“What really stands out about Gabriel and the Apocalypse is the band’s ability to write music that can stand up in the mainstream market but which doesn’t cater mindlessly to mainstream trends. Instead, the group brings out flavorful sounds saturated with original thought.” – A&R Select
