Longing to realize a long-cherished musical and artistic dream, Deepak Nair(Dean) found his way to Germany in November 2003 to study the Bachelor of Musical Arts at Mainz. Having in mind a vision of a fresh and challenging new style of music, it was only a short time until he gathered around him a bunch of young, outstanding musicians to form GURU. The main idea of GURU is to melt elements of traditional Indian music and modern rock into a furious and energetic mélange which the band likes to describe as Indian New Rock. The lyrics of Deepak Nair often deal with states of spiritual and emotional restlessness and are written and performed in traditional Hindi language, whereas the music of GURU is inspired by contemporary international rock acts such as System of a Down or lostprophets.
Dean returned to India after sucessfully completeing his Bachelors degree in 2007 and roped in old friend and veteran guitarist Saibal basu to revive GURU.
GURU is now looking at breaking into the Indian rock scene by performing with its new Indian line up.
