In Other Words Women’s Books and Resources is Portland’s nonprofit, feminist bookstore. We always strive to inspire new, diverse, and cutting edge writers and guarantee the availability of books by feminists, lesbians, and women of color. IOW values books as cultural and intellectual expressions, not merely commodities. Our core values are building, strengthening, and supporting women’s community, diversity of feminist perspective, education for empowerment, and social change through grass roots activism.
The store is a community center for art and politics, a place that encourages women's creative expression, radical ideas, and political activism. Grass-roots organizing groups use the store for meetings free of charge. The store also sponsors lectures, workshops, open mike evenings, readings and musical events.
Come visit us in our big beautiful new space at 8 NE Killingsworth Street (on the corner of North Williams Avenue), and check out our website at www.inotherwords.org, where you can order books (any books!) and see our full calendar of events.
As you know In Other Words Women¹s Books and Resources is a non-profit. In fact, we are the only surviving non-profit women¹s bookstore in this country. And we are among a dwindling number of for-profit women¹s bookstores. In an effort to become more sustainable we have decided to charge a minimal fee for events held at the store. Event attendees will be asked to donate $5 at store events, unless otherwise noted.
For every $100 spent at an independent bookstore, $45 was returned to the local economy in the form of wages, local purchases, and profits. In contrast, less than $13 of each $100 spent at big box or on line bookstores stayed local." Civic Economy Magazine?
