About Me

The Art Deco Society of California (ADSC) honors the aesthetic achievements of the first half of the 20th Century, especially the decades of the 1920s, '30s and '40s that are nowadays called the Art Deco period.
The ADSC was founded in 1981 by architectural historian Michael Crowe and other preservationists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Like our counterparts in the U.S. and around the world, the ADSC is a member of the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies.
We are a not-for-profit [501(c)3] membership organization that endeavors to increase public awareness of the Art Deco era, to preserve and promote its art, architecture, music, fashions, transportation, and other forms of its popular culture.
Preservation
In pursuit of that educational goal, we research and document buildings, other structures and artifacts worthy of preservation. And annually, we award certificates of merit -- and publicize --noteworthy preservation and restoration activities in California.
Enjoyment
Equally important to us is communicating the great sense of fun and elegance inherent in the Art Deco style. This we do by sponsoring and promoting activities that revive the fashions, the songs, the dances, and the myriad entertainments of that wonderful era.

The Gatsby Summer Afternoon, 2004

A three-minute video of the 20th Annual Gatsby Summer Afternoon, put by the Art Deco Society of California on the second Sunday in September at Dunsmuir Historic Estate in Oakland, California. The video was done by Evening Magazine, a longrunning San Francisco TV show, and aired on New Year's Eve 2004. Featured on camera are Laurie Gordon, who created the first "Gatsby", and Michael Crowe, who founded the Art Deco Society of California. There are no spectators at this idyllic event, which fills a five-acre lawn with vintage picnic spreads, classic cars, and live music and dancing that evoke the best of the 1920s and '30s.
