MARK VENAGLIA - ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Mark has a degree in fine art and a master's degree in art history from Carnegie-Mellon University. Originally from New York, he has exhibited widely throughout the country and for over a decade has called Los Angeles home. His mural installations can be seen at The New York Public Library, the City of Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles, as well as many private venues. He is the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Community Foundation, and the California Arts Council.
Mark Venaglia began mastering, then furthering, the meticulous art of Trompe L'oeil for Manhattan in 1985. Called "one of the most exciting artists in America today," by The New York Times and LA Times, the artist continues his aesthetic exploration of the abstract elements within Contemporary Realism in Los Angeles with "Earth, Sea & Sky" at BGH Gallery at Bergamot Station. He divides his time between Los Angeles, Manhattan and Hawaii.
You may see his recent Public Art Project with the City of Pasadena at Euclid and Cordova. Expanding upon the Plein Air movement of a previous century, "The Arpeggio" is the city's first exterior mural diptych showing the full cycle of daylight upon the San Gabriel Mountains. "Huntington Fantasia" is the largest interior mural installation anywhere in the city. Paying tribute to a few of Mr. Venaglia's inspirations such as Jessie Botke, Charles Burchfield and Klimt, the nine panels are portraits of vegetation -specific to the landmark Gardens. Northern California art critic, Emily Goodrich Southern California Art Digest, discovered this mural suite during her stay and wrote: "A whirlwind pastiche of Art Nouveau and mid Sixties hallucinations- one would not anticipate their adornment in so corporate an environment, which further enhances their status as one of Pasadena's greatest aesthetic surprises. Venaglia controls technique, composition, texture and a deep sense of color with the assured skill and confidence of any late Nineteenth century master...murals' whimsical charm camouflage an unrelenting eroticism that one finds simultaneously unsettling and captivating throughout."

REVIEWS
"Mark's uncommon breadth of theme and skill of expression and sensitivity will truly astonish...each composition attests to a rich flow of his keen sense of aesthetics, steady talent, ardor and distinctive poetry."
-Marija Pavlovich- McCarthy, Connecticut Art Review November 2002
"Mr. Venaglia places his soul in every brushstroke...one of the genuine talents alive in the United States...influence of Eastern philosophy is most apparent."
Hitashi Osada, Tokyo Ministry of Art & Culture, September 1990
"Mark Venaglia's incandescent utilization of paint will absorb you. Employing finely realized, Golden Age of Animation-based techniques in erotic, whimsical depictions the artist comments on diversity and economic distinctions... With crisp, articulate draftsmanship and a penchant for saturated colors, Venaglia's imagery is complete... Not content with Representation for representation' s sake, this artist seduces with his current solo-show in as many facets as one might encounter during an entire evening of performance art. His painterly techniques do not obscure the narrative, upon closer examination I found them to be amplified.
Marin Independent Journal Michael James Ryman, April 1998
ARTIST STATEMENT
"I paint to further my respect and admiration for the magnificent artists who came before me. To revel in the sensual, meticulous work of Ernest Hackle and see it come to life more than half a century later in Disney's 'Fantasia' is the creative lineage I am a part of. Georgia O'Keeffe and Vincent VanGogh are the obvious inspirations. I am just as profoundly influenced by Agnes Pelton and Charles Burchfield. Janet Fish is an absolute revelation for me and, to this day, find her use of oil paint still has much in common with Sargent's sparkling watercolors, created more than a century ago. With all due respect to his mother, Whistler's 'Nocturnes' propelled me into a visual synthesis of scientific exploration and representational painting. Attempting to define God, a multitude of explanations currently exist. I rely upon the act of painting as a means to further my own understanding. Wayne Thiebaud writes: 'We've only begun to scratch the surface of what painting can do.' If I had another one hundred years in which to continually create, I feel I would never get to explore all the new directions that Realism is calling to take it in. I feel very fortunate that, within my own lifetime, my work is acknowledged and comprehended by a wide variety of critics and collectors. This recognition provides me with the freedom to continue growing as an artist."
