My name is Bola and I am a playwright, before I became a writer I had a life long passion to be an actor. But frustrated with the lack of roles for black people and fed up of the way some forms of the media alienate black Britain’s by condemning our culture, made me take a hard look at myself. DID I WANT TO GO INTO AN INDUSTRY WHERE I WOULD BE TREATED LIKE A PUPPET ON A STRING OR DID I WANT TO BE THE ONE PULLING THE STRINGS? I settle for the second part and took the first steps in trying to make a difference I began to write. In 2006 I started the Critical Mass writing group at the Royal Court theatre where I wrote my first play 'GONE TOO FAR' a play about two brothers from different worlds and their journey through a south London estate. My play was selected out of 400 plays to be performed in the New Writer Festival 2007 at the Royal Court theatre for a two week run. I believe strongly that our culture needs to be celebrated, I for one have stopped making excuses for who I am and now want people to accept me for what I have to offer. As well as being a playwright I am also a trainee theatre Director on a Young Director programme with StoneCrab theatre. I directed a rehearsed reading of TopDog/UnderDog by Suzi Lori Parks at the Brockley Jack theatre in June 2006. I am also working on phase two of the programme where I will be directing a full play (date to be confirmed). I am a very ambitious person who believes that anything is possible.
