Broke But Making Films

Arrrrrrrrggggh....

About Me

Hello.
My name is Greg Hall and I am a writer and director of British independent feature films.
Here I am:
And here I am again in some fancy press cuttings:
I made my debut feature "The Plague" (2004) at the age of 22 for £3,500 out of pure frustration and boredom with mainstream culture.
This is what some people thought of it:
It picked up some awards notably the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation Prize from British Director Mike Leigh, screened internationally at festivals and finally a UK cinematic release in 2006.
Here are some photos of fond memories:
It showed on BBC 2 as part of the British Film Forever season during the Summer of 2007. Which was a huge honour. Supposedly it had 300,000 views. Which is a lot of people! It is avaliable on DVD from all good retailers...

I premiered my second feature for the Manchester International Festival, the people behind that Monkey Opera with Damon Albarn. It is called "Kapital"(2007) and I made it aged 25.
It was a co-commission with renowned composer Steve Martland. While it was low budget I was given complete creative freedom, and wanted to do something very different. It was sold out. And this is what the Metro thought:
Some people loved it and to be fair some people hated it. But I guess that is better than sitting on the fence..?

So thats me.
I am currently working on my third feature film called "Dark Night Of The Soul" which should hopefully be going into production this year. Fingers crossed!
And I have also recently optioned the film rights for "Bash The Rich" which will be feature numero four! Touch wood.
I love making films. Cinema can convey messages and meaning to a lot of people, touching lives and making us question our preconceptions. Which is a beautiful notion - sharing ideas. Don't get me wrong. I don't think Films can change the World. Only People and Action can. So what is the use of towing the line? Making the same old generic crap that "sold" before. I hate the media. It is full of a lot of vacuous and shallow people. And yet I am part of it... It is difficult to maintain a sense of integrity and creativity but I'm going to give it a good old go. And hopefully the films I make will spread ideas and some people will ACT upon those ideas. Fuck making advertisements and mediocre entertainment (Four Weddings and Another Notting Hill anyone?!?!?). Modern life is so fucking boring... No one feels the need to say anything anymore unless it is to sell you a deodorant or pair of jeans. Lets burn this shit house to the ground and build something beautiful out of the ashes.
I run a company called Prodigal Productions.

And I really am broke. It's not bullshit. Despite the nice things you read above it is a real struggle. So all support and dvd sales (Or any offer of paid work!?!) are honestly greatly appreciated.
KEEP CULTURE INDEPENDENT!

My Interests

My highlight of 2007 was being painted by portrait artist Stephen Earl Rogers for the front cover of the "TEN4" Magazine by FilmFour. He got the bags under my eyes just right!

I was featured as the "New Talent" alongside the established talents of Peter Carlton, Peter Kosminsky and Charles Steele.

I'd like to meet:

Disobedient people. Throughout history obedient people always dress up in uniforms and commit genocides. At least with disobedient people you know where you stand.

I would like to meet these kids...

Music:

When not making feature films I can be found making Music Videos (alongside my cohort Paco Sweetman co-directing, co-editing and co-producing) under the guise of The Beta Brothers.

We are currently selling a Benjamin Zephaniah DVD. Check out our myspace page by clicking HERE

This Youtube Player is all four episodes of the "Hood Newz" that I shot in 2005 with lead actor Dezert Eagle from "The Plague"(2004) on the grimey streets of South London. They were screened on Channel 4. Episode 2 on Tony Blair is my favourite!

Books:

I love reading! So I have decided to rate and recommend some books:
RECENTLY READ:
"Outlaws Of America" Dan Berger - A thorough and critically balanced review of the Weather Ungerground, the white middle class radicals who aligned themselves with the Black Panthers, Latino and Native American rebels of late 60's America. Informative and inspiring.
"Psychogeography" Merlin Coverley - A brilliant and concise look at the writers and artist that have contributed to the term psychogeography. From Blake and Debord to Sinclair. Top read!
"Alice In Wonderland" Lewis Carrol - A classic and easy read. Surreal and spot on.
"Unholy Alliance" Peter Levenda - highly recommended! Traces the origins of 19th Century anti-semitism, the occult inspirations behind nazi Germany, up to the spread of fascism in South America. Highly informative and a great chapter debunking the Protocols!
"The Destructors" Graham Greene - quality short story from a master of literature.
"Anti-Fascist" Martin Lux - Written by a very good friend of mine. Read it from cover to cover in a day. Eye opening account of fighting and defeating the Right wing including the Lewisham and Southall riots. Covers ten years of the 1970's and shows how they were kicked off the street! Great!
"The Secret Case Of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde" Robert Louis Stevenson - Obviously such a famous premise but the original short story must be read! Genius use of narrator and shows Soho in it's true Gothic light.
"Doors Of Perception" Aldous Huxley - Mad as a sack of badgers! Worth a glimpse.
"No Gods No Masters" Daniel Guerin - A quintessential must for anyone interested in some of the most radical writers and thinkers of history. A brilliant reference guide for a basic understanding of the Anarchist history.
"London The Biography" Peter Aykroyd - A magnum opus of a book! A wonderful and enlightening view of history and environment.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND:
"Bash The Rich" Ian Bone - I own the film rights so obviously slightly biased... a hilarious and enjoyable read of British radical politics from the 60's to 80's.
"London Orbital" Iain Sinclair - One of my favourite writers, walking the M25, exploring the suburban crevasses. Genius.
"The Catcher In The Rye" JD Salinger - Read it when I was fifteen. Blew my mind...
"The World Turned Upside Down" Christopher Hill - A must must read of the English Revolution, the Levellers, the Diggers, Winstanley etc. The ultimate British history book!!
"Foucaults Pendulum" Umberto Eco - Wow! A master of language. Densely heavy yet palpable and light at the same time. Quality.
"The Secret History" Donna Tartt - Enjoyable and entertaining read.
"Nineteen Eighty Four" George Orwell - Classic. Enough said.
"War Against The Black Panthers" Huey P. Newton - A dissertation written by the man himself. Passionate and very informative.
"Fahrenheit 451" Ray Bradbury - Read this at the age of thirteen and have read it once a year ever since. Read it now!
"The Holocaust Industry" Norman G. Finkelstein - An informative look at the culture of holocaust and a scathing expose. Definetly worth a read.
"One Hundred Years Of Solitude" Gabriel Garcia Marquez - Epic. Beautiful. Ground breaking story telling.
"Revolution Of The Every Day Life" Roaul Vanegiem - Out of all the Situationists this is the most poetic piece of work. Still slightly verbose but enjoyable all the same.
"Last Exit To Brooklyn" Hubert Selby Jnr - A colloquial masterpiece. Raw and real.
"101 Ways Diana Could Have Died" Dr James Parsons - This guy is a genius!! Artwork and humour is debased, foul and laugh out loud! Quality.
"Atomised" Michel Houellebecq - Recommended by an ex-girlfriend (!?!). A decadent take on human nature. Highly engaging.
"Dispatches" Michael Herr - Raw (an understatement!?) recollection of the vietnam war. Relevant now more than ever.
"I, Robot" Issac Asimov - Classic. Amazing writer. And a shit film with Will Smith in..? How? Why!
"The Rum Diary" Hunter S. Thompson - An early work and one of his best.
"Junky" William Burroughs - Amazing. Exhilirating.
"The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch" Philip K. Dick - Classic K. Dick - paranoid and schizophrneic!
"The Book Of Law" Aleister Crowley - Hmmm. Interesting if you want to understand the mindset of a man who described himself as the "Great Beast".
"The Outsider" Albert Camus - Classic. Simple. Explosive.
"Manufacturing Consent" Noam Chomsky - Highly relevant and powerful book but a very misunderstood man. Why doesn't he write more about his passion of anarchism??
"Rasta and Resistance" Horrace Campbell - A thoroughly informative and balanced history of the black struggle.
"Culture & Resistance" Edward Said - An enjoyable writer that casts a light on an alternative (Orientalist) take of middle eastern history.
CURRENTLY STACKED UP NEXT TO MY BED:
"The Making of the English Working Class" E. P. Thompson, "Lucy Parsons American Revolutionary" Carolyn Ashbaugh, "The Battle of the Beanfield" Andy Worthington (ed), "Call Of The Wild" Jack London, "Russian Anarchists" Paul Avrich, "High Priest" Timothy Leary, "The Divided Self" R.D.Laing, "William Blake Visionary Anarchist" Peter Marshall.

Heroes:

Very recently I was mentionned in The Independent newspaper:

I have just acquired the film rights to Ian Bone's autobiography "Bash The Rich: True Life Confessions Of An Anarchist In The UK" and have been spending a fair bit of time with the "most dangerous man in Britain"

Watch the clips above to get a glimpse into the World of Ian Bone.
