PAMELA RODRIGUEZ IEMPSA 2007-2008 En la Orilla is the story of a young Peruvian rediscovering the diverse and vibrant cultural heritage that rising to the surface in today’s Peru. En la orilla brings an urban edge to the traditional rhythms and expressing the vision of the youth who are reaching back to their roots to find their identity in this confusing moment of globalization and cultural homogenization that blasts through the airwaves and television. Pamela teams with a group of solid musicians exploring the traditional rhythms of Peru especially the musica criolla of Lima that brings together the fusion of Spanish, Indigenous and African roots. This recording pays to the past, present and future of Peru, a trail that captures of the essence of the cultural mixture and bohemian resilience that enables the survival of dances, rhythms and existential poetry over generations of attempts to harness and control it. Pamela’s poetry evokes the existential wanderings of Vallejo with the essence of girl power, the women’s vision of changing world, a garden of contradictions, sensual pleasures and textures that are invisible to men.World music is a genre that has brought the sounds diverse cultural to the ears of an international public but at the same time has created new stereotype and cultural archetypes that have reduced complex musical forms to a few rhythms and sounds. En la orilla brings forward many of Peru’s musical styles into a modern genre with out simplifying and squaring the syncopation rhythmic complexity of the Zamacueca, Panalivio, Festejo, marinera and the classic sound of the tropical peruvian cumbia and musica chicha.Pamela’s voice evokes the smoky passion of the nightlife of the Nueva Lima where reggaeton, cumbia , indie rock and traditional musica criolla combine in a swirling soudscape. This recording brings togethor a fiery group of musicians interacting in the style of the 1950’s Blue Note sessions, a musical dialogue pushing the edge (la an Medrano Cotitio, legendary cajonero who traces his musical lineage back to the elders of Chincha. Fallo Munoz, Peruvian guitar virtuoso who defined the Afri Peruvian guitar style in the international arena in his recordings with Susana Baca.
