Marlene Kuntz was founded in 1990 by the guitarist Riccardo Tesio and the drums player Luca Bergia. The singer and guitarist Cristiano Godano, who previously sang in the broken up Jack on fire, immediately joins the band. They come to the final in the rock contest “Rock targato Italia†in 1993 and Gianni Maroccolo notices them.
Their first album, “Catarticaâ€, is released in May 1994, and is the first CD ever published by the newborn Consorzio Produttori Indipendenti, an independent record company, that will close in the early months of 2002. This album contains most of the “classics†of the band, which their public still wants to listen to during their concerts. At the end of the year, the album is on the top of almost every reader’s poll of the specialised press. The band CSI plays live a personal acoustic version of one of Marlene Kuntz’s song, “Lieveâ€, and reherse it in their live album “In quieteâ€.
In May 1996 “Il vile†is released, the first independent record company album ever to be found in Nielsen’s top 50. In this album as well there’s a couple of songs, which the band can’t do without any more during its live performances. For the making of, the bass player Dan Solo eventually joins the band, so that the group is finally steady.
From 1994 to 1997 Marlene Kuntz never stops performing live, so that it becomes the most loved and estimated Italian rock band. If we want to see “by hand†what exactly Marlene Kuntz does in its live concerts, we can have a look at the VHS movie “Petali di Candoreâ€, which Francesca Dall’ Olio and Guido Chiesa shot in 1997, after joining them during their tour.
In 1998 a mini album, “Come di sdegnoâ€, takes the stage, a “non transitional†album, which contains some new pieces, remix of old and new songs and a 24 minute long improvvisation, entitled “La vampa delle impressioniâ€. It’s an experimental album, nonetheless the public likes and appreciates it.
In the early 1999 comes up “Ho ucciso Paranoiaâ€, a double album, with “Sporeâ€, an album only made of improvvisations, which comes to place number 6 in the hit chart. The critics believe this is the most mature Marlene Kuntz’s album. After this release, a 80 date tour all around Italy follows, with a total audience of 100.000 people. This long and lucky “live time†reaches its best with the realisation of their first live album, H.U.P. Live In Catharsis, which is released at the end of 1999. Its title recalls all the previous ones: Ho ucciso paranoia (H.U.P.), IL Vile (whose anagram is “Liveâ€) and Catartica (Catharsis).
Marlene Kuntz always had a good relationship to cinema: Guido Chiesa chose their music for the soundtrack of Babylon, a couple of their pieces are to be found in Jack Frusciante è uscito dal gruppo and, with the other bands of the Consorzio Produttori Indipendenti, took part in the project Materiale Resistente. This album was used by Guido Chiesa and Davide Ferrario for their documentary film. In 1997 the film Tutti giù per terra was shot, taken from Giuseppe Culicchia’s book, with the direction of Davide Ferrario; its soundtrack is made with the contribution of all the Consorzio bands. In 2000 they take part in Beniamino Catena’s short movie Quando si chiudono gli occhi, shown at the Venezia Film Festival.
On 2000, October the 13th, “Che cosa vediâ€, their fourth album, is released, including the famous duet “La canzone che scrivo per teâ€, performed with Skin. The public had the chance to follow the whole making of practically “in progress†on the web site www.mk-2000.net (which in the early 2003 was replaced by the new official site www.marlenekuntz.com), with previews, comments and videos, something quite new and unusual in Italy at that time. More than 50.000 copies are sold, so that the album comes to the “disco d’oro†prize. At the same time, the label Virgin sells again , in a new remasterised version, all the previous albums of the band.
In 2001 “Cometa†is released, a mini CD with the omonimous new piece which gives the title to it, some live pieces, among them an intense interpretation of “La vampa delle impressioniâ€, rehersed at the C.S.O.A. of Rivolta di Marghera, and some remixed songs.
At the end of the tour (October 2001), Marlene come once again into a studio to work at the new album. At the end of June 2002 13 songs are ready and Rob Ellis and Head (who are the producers of the most P.J. Harvey’s albums) became Marlene’s contributor during this time. The album is made between October and November in Berlin, an extremely fascinating city, which completely fit to the band’s athmosphere, and right there the album title comes: “Senza Pesoâ€.
2003, January the 24th : “A fior di pelle†is released, the first single, taken from the new album, which immediately is included at place numb. 9 in FIMI/Nielsen selling chart.
2003, February the 7th: “Senza pesoâ€, Marlene Kuntz’s 5th album, is released. It is introduced by the band in a live tour all around Italy between 2003 and 2004.
2004, May 28th: in a new “non transitional†time of theirs, Marlene release “Fingendo la poesiaâ€, an extended play which recalls and sets of one of the best pieces of “Senza pesoâ€, but, above all, includes the involving covers of two classics of Italian “songwriters musicâ€, “Non gioco più†and “Alle prese con una verde Milonga†(taken from the repertoires of Mina e Paolo Conte), and two new acoustic songs. This EP comes immediately at place number 2 of the chart, the highest new entry between te singles of the week.
On January 31th, www.insidemarlene.com, a web site completely dedicated to the sixth Marlene Kuntz’s album, is born, every day enriching itself with new details, embracing more and more contents.
2005, March 11th: “Bianco Sporcoâ€, the sixth album of the extraordinary carrier of Marlene Kuntz. It was rehersed between Cuneo and Rome, entirely produced by Marlene, once again it takes the contribution of Rob Ellis, who already was the artistical producer of “Senza pesoâ€, and Victor Van Vugt, a sound engineer, mixer and producer of Nick Cave, P.J. Harvey and Beth Orton. Gianni Maroccolo becomes the special guest playing the bass, because Dan Solo had broken up with the roup to follow individual projects. The album is preceeded by the single “Bellezzaâ€, played by the radio from 18th of February 2005.
The superb tour, begun on 15th of April 2005, is to be mentioned, with Rob Ellis playing the tastiere and Gianni Maroccolo playing the bass.
This tour is shown right now, with a great success, in a new “s-low†look, so “neither thunder nor storm made by great distorted assaults, but a terse unrestness, made of suspended notes in the hollow of apnea and on the public’s breath. No unplugged because it is electric, romantic, sonic, lyrical, intense, poetic, tense. It’s a show of slow and rock songs, a show of MK s-lowâ€.
The band has once again the precious and prestigious contribution of Gianni Maroccolo as a musician in the rythmical section, who will be there in the next work of the band too, which should be ready in this year.
