Origami Sounds

Space Jazz Afro Funk Since 2002

About Me

has existed in one form or another since roughly 2002; it began as a distraction from the tedium of living in Wolverhampton. Without us having a specific direction in mind (and after a few hastily-arranged live appearances around the Midlands), it has evolved into an album's worth of music with the organic sensibilities of funk, jazz and afro-beat, and the production values of modern hip-hop, broken-beat and dub. Built around the core of bassist Jim Cooper , producer/guitarist Pedro y el Lobo , saxophonist Greg Surmacz , and turntablist/artist DJ Vital (also featuring a revolving cast of guest vocalists and musicians), the album is called Origami Sounds.Because of the organic, constantly shifting nature of the Paper Tiger setup all of its members are involved with other bands and projects. So as well as Paper Tiger, the Origami Sounds Collective is home to 8-piece dub collective the Gentleman's Dub Club , the beats and artwork of DJ Vital , the progressive improvised music of Czar Muggers, commissioned musical director Ed Thomas (and his production team Paycheck ), the live experimental music of Grudle Bay Riots , US-based hip-hop trio, elevatedSOUL , producers Fantastic Mr Fox , Barney Rumble , and all manner of forward-thinking, innovative music. We hope that the Origami Sounds name will eventually become synonymous with high-quality music - not as a label as such, more a loosely-defined collective of like-minded individuals. It is not our primary aim to make money out of this venture (although breaking even would be nice from time to time); get on the cover of the NME and have twelve months of bloated rock 'n' roll excess while dating supermodels, only to disappear from the music scene forever. We simply enjoy making music and art, and feel compelled to share it. Similarly, any unsigned or underground music that gets us excited, we'll try and share that with you as well. There is an amazing wealth of music out there that stimulates the brain as well as the hips; this is our only policy - music that is innovative without pretension. After the recent release of Paper Tiger's remix of the Lautrec track 'Caught In Your Headlights (feat. Julia Biel)' as well as Fantastic Mr. Fox's remix of 'Glory Days' by Just Jack, expect more material from Origami Sounds soon. Current projects include production work for former Cunninlynguist Mr SOS, the Czar Muggers LP, plus remixes of Julia Biel, Instinct, Polar Bear, Bongo Chilli, a Paper Tiger 7" single and more...
