CONTROLLING CYBERSPACE - A "NEOCONSERVATIVE" DREAM

In 1997, the "neoconservative" group "Project for the New American Century (PNAC)" was formed, members include Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz. More info on his right-wing organisation here.

In their report, "Rebuilding America's Defenses" (published 2000), they write that "tomorrow's U.S. armed forces must meet three new missions", one of which is (page 51 of the document):

"Control of space and cyberspace. Much as control of the high seas - and the protection of international commerce - defined global powers in the past, so will control of the new "international commons" be a key to world power in the future. An America incapable of protecting its interests or that of its allies in space or the "infosphere" will find it difficult to exert global political leadership."

Read the full document here.

IN MY OPINION, THE FREEDOM OF THE INTERNET IS VERY FRAGILE. LET'S NOT SOME "NEOCONSERVATIVE" CONTROL-FREAKS TAKE OVER CYBERSPACE.

Major telecommunications companies are spending millions lobbing the U.S. congress to make the Internet into a private network. In political lingo this means abandoning what is called “Net Neutrality”. In common sense terms it’s about the government withdrawing our right to Internet Freedom, it’s about the Death of The Internet. Mark Warner, former Governor of Virginia, embraces Internet freedoms and access by declaring his support for network neutrality. Warner, a former tech entrepreneur, urges the public to contact Congress in support of neutrality -- so the person with "the next big idea" does not get put "at the back of the line" on the Internet.
