ROUND-SHINY-PLASTIC!

About Me

Currently I DJ at Luxuriamusic.com an internet radio station specializing in Lounge, Exotica, Jazz, Surf, Go-Go, Psych, Garage, Bubblegum, …basically every genre of cool music. I do a Bossa Nova/Samba/Latin show called "Pretty World" Sundays from 2-4 Pacific Standard Time. I often fill in for the other djs on Luxuria when they can't make their shows making me the "Girl Friday". Fridays are usually the day that I fill in on the "Mod Quad" a great line up music with "Volcanic Action", Surf and Exotica with Domenic Priore, "Kaos a Go-Go" with Agent Kari, a mixture of psych, yeye, easy-listening. "Bubble Gum and other Delights" with Traderbeck, as the name implies, and then again Domenic's show, Riot on Sunset Strip, a show that features Mid-'60s bands that played on the Sunset strip. I have also filled in for Sheryl Farber and her all girl group/vocalist show called, "Splendor in the Grass" as well as for David Ponak's "the Nice Age" which features a lot of male vocalists like Scott Walker and a mixes it up with a lot of newer bands like Caribou. Basically, you can listen to Luxuriamusic.com all day, all week, and never be bored. We have a fantastic team of Djs that I am very proud to spin with! Where did it start for me? As a child I discovered the Beatles and Rolling Stones records in my Mother's closet. Soon after I started washing cars to raise money for my newfound passion, record collecting. I became a more serious record collector after meeting Greg Shaw when I had just turned 18.Greg and I became fast friends and he gave me a job at Bomp Records helping Suzy Shaw with mail order and then moved up Art Director for Voxx Records. I had toyed with being in a band and was asked to join the Pandoras at one time by Paula Pierce. The selection was based my appearance rather than my musicianship, which was nonexistent. My love for dancing to music has always outweighed my desire to play it. I could always be seen frantically dancing away in front of all my favorite bands like the Crawdaddy's and then running off to the DJ decks. I started to spin at a club called "The Action" in downtown L.A. that I promptly renamed the "Rave Up!" When the club was forced to close, Greg Shaw founded the "Cavern Club" in Hollywood. He asked me to DJ and make flyers for this new 60's haven. The club got a surprisingly amount of press from major media outlets such as Newsweek, 20/20 and People magazine. Squares flocked to see "the freaks" and eventually the novelty wore off and the Cavern closed. Fortunately Greg had audio taped many of the bands played there and now Tim Gassen (Knights of Fuzz) is re-mastering the lives tapes soon to be released on Bomp! During the Cavern time, Domenic Priore author of "Look! Listen! Vibrate! Smile!" came to the club after reading an interview with me that appeared in "The L.A. Weekly." He told me about his idea for a TV show he wanted to call "It's Happening!" It was a Shindig/Ready Steady Go styled TV program that would soon feature bands like the Tell Tale Hearts, Unclaimed, Fuzztones, Untamed Youth, Loved Ones, Quagmires, Nashville Ramblers, just to name a few. Well, it wasn't long after our first meeting that we started a friendship and partnership that would last for 20 years. We had hosted, directed, edited, decorated, and danced...you name it, and we did it, all without any sponsorship! "It's Happening!" received much publicity and offers from MTV, but in the end nothing happened. Sadly, we stopped doing the shows; it became too much work with little return for the efforts exuded. Now we have plans for sometime in the future to release a best of "It's Happening!" on DVD. The project will take some time to complete due to legal issues and our inability to find some of the band members that performed on the show. We need those before we can complete the project. Right now we have most all the band members but we are missing a few like the Leopards. As well as "It's Happening!" I produce a more recent show called "The Now Sound", also with live music from bands such as the Venue and The Soundtrack of Our Lives from Sweden and the Masonics from London. At the moment, my show is on hold while I work on the legal issues concerning the release of DVDs.My future plans include a documentary on 60’s fashion genius designer Rudi Gernreich. It will include interviews with Peggy Moffitt, William Claxton, Layne Nielson, and Leon Bing. My main source of income is manufacturing '60s based designs in plastic as well as having an retail space in the 111 Antique Mall in Palm Springs. I specialize in '60s and'70s home décor, jewelry, art, and clothing. After years of full time professional hoarder of everything nobody needs, it was time to let go of some things. But of all the things I that I am most crazy about is my dog Benjamin! He is an Australian Shepard/Catahoula mix, smart, sensitive, sweet, funny, charming, and multi-lingual as he spends a lot of time around my European friends. He is just the best friend in the whole world! I adopted this little gem after Hurricane Katrina, and haven't regretted a single moment. Except for water, (understandable) he loves everybody and everything! Being from the "Big Easy," Benjamin is easy going and just what I need to ground me no matter what is going on in my eventful life. It is the best feeling in the world coming home to unconditional love, it really is.

My Interests

My deepest passions are lie within the era of the Sixties. I don't limit myself to just that era, I like most all rock and roll. I am especially interested in fashion designer RUDI GERNREICH. I am currently working on a website dedicated to him and soon, a documentary of his life. I love most all aspects of the 60's except for Vietnam, tie-dye, Woodstock, and all the other horrible mis-associations that are mentioned so often with the era. The 60's to me are about great times and great designs--be it music, fashion, architecture, or the spirit of the people that innovated so many things today, but especially myself.

I'd like to meet:

As far as My Space friends, I want to hear from everybody that danced or played on "It's Happening" or attended the Cavern Club in Hollywood. (You know who you are!) A complete list of bands will be posted later. Most everyone I would like to meet is dead by now. Dan Hicks of Charlatans’ fame would be amusing. UPDATED! Meeting Dan Hicks was great! What a gentleman, wit, and style! Love him! See my heroes box.I really want to meet Candy Johnson the Go Go dancer from the Beach Party Movies. Of course they might be dead by now. Anybody know? I also want to meet Toni Basil, the other greatest Go Go dancer in the world, of course David Winters as well!

Music:

Just to make this brief or I would run out of my space; Psychedelic music is probably my favorite- LOVE, THE FACTORY, the KALEIDOSCOPE (both UK & US), but Garage, Folk Rock, and Beat from all over the world is a close second. I also adore BOSSA NOVA & SAMBA. It's hard to name favorites but BRASIL 66 comes in top of the list and then I guess MARCOS VALLE, LUIZ HENRIQUE, ASTRUD GILBERTO, JOAO GILBERTO, GILBERTO GIL, GAL COSTA, CATAENO VELOSO, QUARTETO EM CY, and SERGIO MENDES, JOBIN is classic but still so beautiful. Of course all this music is a close second to my first love, THE BEATLES!My favorite new artists now are The SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES, just amazing live, great songs, and super cool people all around. NICOLA CONTE does amazing things with Jazz, Samba, Bossa Nova. He is really a brilliant artist and I truly love his stuff. The RAY COLLINS HOT CLUB from Germany is super fun to see and watch all nine guys, swinging around the stage. The GO GETTERS from Sweden. (All bands from Sweden are fantastic!) Even though Rockabilly isn't my scene, these guys just blew me away with their sound and show. There was so much raw energy from these three guys, it kept me dancing through their entire set! THE THANES- Everything that the Thanes release is Great! Any band that Lenny Helsing has anything to do with is fantastic! THE LINK QUARTET- Amazing Hammond Organ with a Powerhouse sound with it! THE VENUE-Super fun Pop from Sweden with a good dose of '60s melodies thrown in! My latest Favorite band is CARIBOU from Canada! Wow, they sound just like a new version of the Who Sell Out LP. They have really amazing songs and melodies.

Movies:

Danger Diabolik! Mario Bava The Graduate-Mike Nichols Casino-Martin Scorsese Freeway-Matthew Bright Ciao Manhattan -John Palmer David Weisman

Television:

Most anything to do with Criminals like Diabolik! I watch a lot of Court TV, I hate injustice and thought of being a lawyer since childhood. (I have long since given up that idea!)

Books:

When I have the time to read, I like Biography's about Music and Musicians. Books I am reading now and I recommend: Riot On Sunset Strip by Domenic Priore Behind the Scenes on the Pegasus Carousel (Love Book) -Michael Stuart Ware For What Its Worth (Buffalo Springfield) John Einarson & Richaie Furay Never Be Sick Again-Raymond Francis M.Sc.

Heroes:

My Heroes are anybody that adopts dogs and cats from shelters! DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS PETS DIE! IF YOUR PET WON'T WEAR A CONDOM, GET HIM FIXED! My other heroes include Arthur Lee, Greg Shaw, and of course Rudi Gernreich, all of which I will never be able to tell how much I appreciate all their work that helped me be the person I am today. Thank you! Dan Hicks! He is brilliant, charming, and hilarious! He knows how to crack a joke or sort out a rude audience, go and feel the pain! Here is the other reason why he is my hero. I found an article in "nTouch" magazine. PART YOUR OWN HAIR HICKS! Dan Hicks, sans Hot Licks, is touring again, and running into some very strange reactions. In Ohio, a man jumped onto the stage during the set and emptied his beer cup into Dan's face. Hicks then proceeded to chase the drunk to a dark corner of the hall and beat the crap out of him. But in Wisconsin the vibes were even stranger. Hicks showed up totally drunk for his ten o'clock set. "I've been drunk four times since I saw you this morning," he gurgled at us, then rammed through his familiar set with Jaime Leopold on bass and John L. Girlon on guitar. But no Lickettes. During the set, Hicks invited all the "local coke dealers and ex-hookers" to a party in his room in the Holiday Inn. After an hour-and-a-half set, Dan retired to the dressing room where he was accosted by an unruly mob, demanding to know where his female vocal stylists were. The shouting started, it got a little nasty with Hicks telling a young girl to "go take your stained underpants home." She replied, "You suck Hicks," whereupon Dan reminded her that he had "three dollars of your fucking money, your dumb twat. Take your parted hair and go home. Just fuck off." With a sly smile fighting its way through Dan's inebriated nervous system, Hicks then escaped a 200-pound groupie wanting to follow him home and hightailed it back to the Holiday Inn, leaving scores behind still asking, "Where's the money?"
