Mark, Andy & Pete all started playing / jamming together in the Blackdown Centre Dawlish in 1996 essentially covering tracks by Paradise Lost, Slayer & Sepultura and were joined by a young second guitarist called Dan who was a music student at Exeter College. The line-up as yet untitled still lacked a vocalist and the lads carried on jamming for weeks without any vocals just instrumentally. It wasnt long before the material covered became heavier and more extreme, and as a result Dan left the band, soon after Andy left the area to go to University in Swansea however he continued rehearsing during his holiday breaks. Rehearsals by this stage were moved to the Canoe store at Dawlish Leisure Centre and this was where the band began writing their own material. Sometime at the end of 1997 Mark and Pete entered Oddrock studios Newton Abbot and recorded the Men Behind the Sun demonstration. However again with all the music written and laid down the lads still had no idea who was going to take care of vocal duties? After careful deliberation Pete made a phone call to an old band colleague Mark Hamlyn former vocalist with Death metal outfit Deadzone. Mark kindly offered to do guest vocals. It wasnt long before Mark Hamlyn Ginge also introduced the name Unit 731 and consequently joined the band as vocalist.A further demonstration was recorded during 1999 and this was tentatively titled This is my flesh. By this stage due to Andy attending University and spending a further year at University in France it was becoming increasingly more difficult for him to write & rehearse with the lads. Bass duties were then provided by Pete Gretin and a second guitarist former Deadzone guitarist Gritz joined the lads for their debut album in 2000 entitled Collective Fury. Unit 731 played their first gig at the Plymouth Cooperage in October 2001. However it was the lads second album Crucifried, that really got the lads noticed and received some really significant feedback in Terrorizer by former Stampin Ground Bass player Ian Glasper. Two further gigs were played before Andy returned to the band on the bass and this was when Unit 731 really started gigging on a more regular basis. For example Torquay Townhouse twice, Plymouth Phoenix five times, and Rockerslive Taunton. During May of 2005 Mark (drums) had to quit Unit 731 due to a wrist injury, sustained from blast beats and as a result Unit 731 became defunct. However this injury didnt stop the lads from playing altogether and the three of them carried on gigging for the rest of 2005 within their other band The Blackcliff a commercial venture covering popular rock/indie tracks in local pubs.By October 2005 Mark, Pete and Andy all decided to reform an extreme metal band namely Cachexic the medical name for dying (very appropriate!) and decided to re-work parts and introduce new material that didnt involve blasting. Mark took over vocal duties and the lads began rehearsing again for a gig arranged at Rockerslive in Feb 06. Clearly from these early rehearsals none of the lads enthusiasm & the materials intensity had been lost, far from it, the sound was even more aggressive and extreme than that of Unit 731. Cachexic played a blinding first headlining gig at Rockerslive with support provided from their old mates Genius Move. The large enthusiastic crowd certainly enjoyed themselves and with the introduction of more sludgy material as well as classic covers & extreme metal favourites provided the audience with a great balance of material, something that appealed to everyone. The lads were asked back to Rockers by Tank and headlined their on Sat 29th April with support from Gripshift, Mofo, Southpaw Jinx, & Armitage skanks. Cachexic also played at Zephyrs bar Exeter Wed 19th April with Homicide, Rectal Haemorrhage & Ultimate Trigger Mechanism which proved to be another extremely successful evening for the band. As well as another very brutal show at Zephyr’s bar Exeter Wed 30th August with Bristol’s Nebular Frost & Exeter’s Sekhmet which was recorded live towards (hopefully) a forthcoming DVD, plus a further gig at Rockerslive on Sat 16th Sept (which was again recorded live) with Homicide & Incarnate. Cachexic played gigs at the Eastcliff Centre Teignmouth Sat 11th November with Homicide & two local bands. They have also played Zephyrs twice in November 2006 and February 2007.
March 2007 has hearalded the arrival of their new drummer Robin who is a fine asset and will alow the band to move further foward than ever before.Cachexic also recorded two tracks as part of a split single release (released 4th August 06) through Virile promotions/records entitled ‘Prison Torture’ with Homicide & Deathflaw. The two Cachexic tracks were ‘World Massacre’ & ‘Terror’s Destroying Our World’. Both tracks although completely distinctive to Cachexic are very different. ‘World Massacre’ is arguably the bands best & most brutal/extreme track to date drawing on black/death/thrash metal influences, whereas ‘TDOW’ draws on two thirds of the bands love for sludge metal & hardcore & combines these genre’s of metal musically whilst the vocals never lose focus of the broader spectrum of death / extreme metal.More recently Cachexic have continued their live assault playing gigs at The Croft, Bristol in April 2007, Zephyrs June 2007, Rockers, Taunton (twice) in August 2007 and The Hub, Exeter October 2007, & The Skiving Scholar Plymouth November 07. So far in 2008 Cachexic have headlined the Metal Mongrels Metal Massacre at the Voodoo Lounge Plymouth on Sat Feb 2nd, as well as headlining at the White Rabbit Plymouth on Mon 11th Feb. More recently Cachexic have played at the Matstock Festival Somerset on Fri 18th April, Hobbits Live Music Venue Weston Super Mare on the 24th April, The Rock Torquay on Friday 16th May & The Limetree Paignton 2nd June.
