...that good fox woman is on the road and will be back in a few weeks...

Nawa. In this lifetime, I hope to fight for causes much larger than myself. In between ironing, cooking, my teen-ager, the saga that is my car, and everything else that occurs in life, I advocate: the Pawnee nation ||| Native Peoples ||| sovereignty & respectful coexistence ||| conflict resolution ||| children ||| radical connectedness ||| Native people in the trenches ||| social justice ||| empathy and compassion ||| students ||| the equitable exchange of culture and ideas ||| Indigenous nationhood. ("Peek-a-Boo or Despair?" photo taken by AJ, February 2008).
Latest Blog Entry: "The Way of the Indigenous Intellectual" My Blog

Currently, I am able to serve all Indigenous Nations and Tribal communities through my work as a faculty member in the Indigenous and American Indian Studies (AIS) Program at Haskell Indian Nations University. I am committed to carrying out the work of the visionaries who led the American Indian Studies movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This movement is based upon a tribal empowerment model which, in part, provides students with an intellectually-charged, academically-rigorous, and pro-Native scholarly environment in which to prepare for a variety of tribal, professional, and community opportunities and responsibilities.

There exist those who will not comprehend the need for a stand-alone AIS entity---and, in fact, work to destroy it and other pro-Native initiatives and peoples. Yet I remain fortunate to engage with relatives, colleagues, and students who recognize and contribute in good ways to AIS, which is our relative, and to the positive connections between it and our respective tribal communities and to our shared struggles as we move forward to stablize Sovereignty and maintain our right to exist.
At Haskell, I teach "Introduction to American Indian Studies" and courses that include research methods, colonization and sovereignty, and conflict resolution. Message me if you would like copies of my syllabi (or just the reading lists). Email Here.

I completely support the Pawnee Nation College and the Tribal College Movement.

"The only dream worth having is to dream that you will live while you are alive, and die only when you are dead. To love, to be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and vulgar disparity of the life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget." - Arundhati Roy

reading thoughts Read Tolstoy to learn about the world, read Shakespeare to learn more about the human condition. Molière said that everyone should write poetry, but not everyone should share their poetry. Learn as much as you can from your tribe or nation's storytellers and historians (this involves listening and memorizing, as well as reading).
