About Ella;
"Definitely an up-and coming Jazz Singer, who can swing through fine standards, yet has a distinctive and highly expressive way with a Ballad" Jazz UK
"An impressive and extremely accomplished singer" Jazz UK.
"A great Jazz Singer - Lovely tone and phrasing" Claire Martin
"Ella has the magic of a great Jazz Singer" Trudy Kerr
You'd think that with a name like Ella it would all just come naturally. Well, this Ella has worked admirably hard towards making the name famous all over again. At just 24, she won sponsorship for a UK tour as the youngest artist Jazz Services had ever taken on board, to a reception of rave reviews.
Ella has been deeply affected by music right from the start and fell in love with the American Songbook at an early age. Born into a creative family in Northern England she grew up in the small village of Greenfield. Surrounded by beautiful countryside Ella spent half of her childhood beside a tape player listening to stuff, whilst the other half was spent writing melodies and walking up the same old hills. At the tender age of 8 she was fortunate to be taught by the great Jazz pianist Nikki Iles, who encouraged her to always think with her ears first. Inspired by Nikki's approach to Jazz Ella then went onto study with top Saxophonist Andy Schofield. This then led to her enrolling at Leeds College of Music on the Jazz degree programme. She began the course as an instrumentalist but within the first few weeks discovered her real love for singing. She switched to first study voice and from then on was under the natural guidance of the fine vocalist Tina May. In 2001 She began gigging on the nothern Jazz scene,recorded a couple of albums and learnt more about life. A couple years later Ella moved to London to continue her studies at Trinity College Of Music. With determined enthusiasm she developed her style with the likes of Anita Wardell, Trudy Kerr, Dave Cliff, Simon Purcell, Nick Weldon. This helped give Ella a clear artistic focus to develop her own style as an open minded Jazz singer.
In recent months Ella has gone back to her roots to study as a saxophonist. January 2008 will see the launch of this fresh sounding project,with a mixture of original matierial and her fresh sounding arrangements of standards.
Ella has performed at various venues including Ronnie Scotts, 606 Club, Vortex, Pizza On The Park, Jazz In The Round, Jazz After Dark, The Wardrobe (Leeds). Hull and Scarbrough Jazz Clubs and has headlined events at Spice Of Life (Soho). She has also held residences at Pizza Express and Cafe Rouge restaurants across the country. Festival appearances include Cheltenham, Riverfront Jazz Festival, Isle Of White, Marlbrough, Southport and Beverley.
