DEF inc. are DJ/producers/club promoters/radio presenters Larry Holcombe and Mark Kane. Standing for Definition Incorporated, the duo are making it their business to redefine music, busting dancefloors with their inimitable sampling, looping, scratching and re-editing 6-deck mixing style.
DEF inc. are a fusion of two very different backgrounds: with 12 years experience behind the decks, Kane emerged from a background of industrial, trance, hard house, and happy hardcore, having played at premier nights such as Sundissential, Insomnia, Smile, Explosion and Seduction, to festival crowds of up to 70,000, as one half of
Kane and Able, hosting for
Marilyn Manson, held a bi-monthly residency at the Jet Lounge in New York, and toured the US, Egypt, Greece and Turkey. Mark is also MD of
Higher Status Events, creating and producing events throughout the London breaks scene and beyond.
Larry's DJ career started as resident/promoter of Manchester's drum and bass/breaks night Definition. In 2003 he (alongside original partner Al) remixed
Coldplay's classic 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' which became one of the biggest chillout anthems of the year, featuring on
'The Best of Cafe del Mar' compiled by Jose Padilla and the
'Perfecto Chills' (Vol 1) compilations. The remix also received extensive airplay from Radio 1 stalwart Zane Lowe amongst others. As well as performing with DEF inc., Larry also DJ's a mash-up of musical styles as Don Sonik. Together their influences dip into a hugely diverse range from reggae and rock to funk and hip hop, via punk, industrial and trance.

Waking the Dread (Spin Out Records) both of which received extensive radio play and heavy DJ support from the likes of
Tayo,
Krafty Kuts,
Soul of Man and
The Breakfastaz and reached No. 4 in the DJ Mags Beats and Breaks Charts and the MixMag house chart respectively. These releases were followed by the bass-crunching heavy
Phat Admirer/50K on
Botchit Breaks, which found its way into the boxes of all the heavyweight djs from
FreQ Nasty to the
Stantons. Phat Admirer was also picked up for the soundtrack of the
Playstation 2 game Eye Toy Kinetic Combat. DEF inc. have since remixed Barcode and Journeyman's
'Wicked Babylon' for Born Idle records and released their follow up single on Botchit entitled
Loaded with Dynamite/University of Dub which was chosen as
DJ mag's single of the month. DEF inc.'s production has not gone unnoticed with
Soul of Man requesting a remix of their classic
'Killa Brew' for their forthcoming Re-Licked album on
FingerLickin. Their skill as producers/remixers has led to a nomination for
best breakthrough producer at this year's Breakspoll awards.
One of the most in demand new breakbeat acts, (DEF inc.'s hectic DJ schedule has been recognised through a nomination for
best breathrough dj at this year's Breakspoll awards), DEF inc.'s dj schedule has taken them the world over with recent tours completed in China, Russia, India and Australia.
