AQUASKY 2008 BIOG
From Tallinn to Taipei, Berlin to Brisbane life moves pretty fast and for Aquasky things are steaming ahead for this production powerhouse. Having just returned from a month in LA where the trio have been making inroads into the much lauded US scene via a month’s tour of Australia, the Bournemouth-based trio have conquered the UK, Europe, Asia and now have their sights set firmly on the US but first of all rewind to 2007…
Dave, Brent and Kieron's kicked off the year by receiving no less than seven nominations at the International Breakspoll Awards held at the Fabric Nightclub in London for their Passenger label. The trio have been busy steaming ahead making their labelone of the strongest independent labels in dance music, always looking forward, never back.
Originally set up as an output for their breaks releases, 2007 saw the label diversify from the ‘bassline’ sound they instigated by releasing electro and fidget house to tech-edge beasts and big bad breaks. 2008 will see the label branch out further giving both artist and label a new foothold in the fickle world of dance music.
2007 also saw the release of ‘This Way Up’, a mix album with a difference, featuring all new music commissioned from a selection of artists they considered to be leading the breaks scene as well as dropping their first single of the year ‘Have A Good Time’ (featuring leading Florida MC Acafool) a single that struck deep into the hearts of both the UK and US breaks scenes as well as infiltrating the mainstream through a superb remix from 2007’s hottest remix duo Sinden & Herve. The album, mixed by D’n’B golden child and recent breaks enthusiast Friction, featured new music from Tom Real & The Rogue Element, Klaus Hill, Nick Thayer, Dopamine, Kid Blue, Rico Tubbs, Backdraft, Rob Le Pitch, Phetsta, Aquasky themselves as well as the debut breaks release from Friction. The album was an instant success with fans, DJs and media alike, put simply it was a trailblazing show of force from one of the undisputed leaders of the scene.
Alongside four tracks taken from ‘This Way Up’ ‘Have A Good Time’ mentioned above, ‘Control Freek’ with Friction, ‘Another Dimension’ alongside Tom Real and finally ‘Wasted Music’ with Rob Le Pitch last year also saw Aquasky working closely with the legendary Ragga Twins on a new single ‘Let Me See Your Hands’, a party breaker that has smashed club land and will see Aquasky work a lot more closely with the Ragga’s in 2008. They also released their debut sample DVD as part of Loopmasters ‘Artist Series’ a DVD they promoted heavily during their time in the states and has already been used by Jason Nevins for his latest remix!
So what’s next for Aquasky themselves? Well 2008 sees the trio working on their tenth artist album, a project that’s being kept top secret at this stage in the game but following 2005’s ‘Teamplayers' project which featured collaborations with the top dogs of the scene, you can guarantee big tings a gwan. The label also will move into releasing artist albums from artists besides Aquasky, with confirmed releases coming from Backdraft, The Body Snatchers and Nick Thayer and they will also be dropping three new volumes of their labels legendary mid price mix album series ‘Breakbeat Bass’. It is easy to tell that this year is going to be bigger and better!
