As a radio show The World Famous Lessons in Jazz Series is a direct challenge to the standard smooth jazz format that has become even more restricted and predictable. The shows flag station, The Voice of Hampton University, WHOV 88.1 FM (Hampton, VA), is the nations 12th ranked college radio station and has been broadcasting Lessons in Jazz for five years.
Hosts, Kevin "The Moose" Anderson, Marcel "Big Cel" Canady, and Montez The "Whiz" Martin, are taking radio to another level and exposing the world to the evolving relationship between Jazz and Hip-Hop. The program combines hip hop, jazz, old school R&B mixes, and historical information giving the show a mass appeal. The ideas and the uniqueness of the shows approach is so vast that all of the age demographics are included.
Providing listeners with a piece of the present and a pinch of the past the World Famous Lessons in Jazz Series has featured numerous appearances and tributes to the revolutionaries of jazz and hip hop such as Easy Mo Bee, Ronny Laws, Dr. Donald Bird, Guru, Pete Rock, Bob James, and Marcus Miller.
If you are in the greater Hampton Roads area you can tune into The World Famous Lessons in Jazz Series every Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm to 7pm on WHOV 88.1FM.

Kevin "The Moose" Anderson was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1976 where his parents contributed to love for jazz mainly on Friday evenings when “mom and pops would scatter records from their individual collections on the living room floor, playing and conversing on who played with who”. Also, the mix tapes that his brothers made for him while they were in school fed him hip-hop, and kept him abreast of the developments in contemporary jazz. Moose would latter find work at one of central Virginia’s largest “mom and pop” music stores, Willies Records & Tapes. The salesman position and close friendships with hometown radio DJ’s Mike Street, and DJ Reese would be his formal introduction to the music industry. “What I learned from DJ Reese and Mike Street was priceless, they taught me the language of the industry, and prepared me to advance once I had landed a job”. Big Cel and Moose met when working together at DJ’s Music & Video, and often hung out after-work making tapes that became origin of Lessons in Jazz. Moose initially started off at WHOV as a student volunteer board operator during the summer of 1999, and quickly advanced through the ranks, becoming one of the youngest jazz programmers in the country. In 2000, he accepted a full-time position as the board operator and production manager for the nationally syndicated Doug Banks Morning Show. Kevin “The Moose” Anderson is now the Assistant Station Manager of WHOV 88.1 fm in addition to hosting and producing The World Famous Lessons In Jazz Series.

Montez “Tha Whiz” Martin was born & raised in Charleston, SC. His radio career began at WPAL Power 730 AM when he started training to become a Dj during the summer of 1993. He quickly learned the technical side of the radio world which earned him the nickname “Whiz Kidd. Whiz worked at WPAL throughout high school & after he graduated in 1999 he became a regular jock on Rhythm 100.9 doing various weeknight & weekend shifts. Whiz continued his radio career at WHOV-FM in the fall of 1999, & earned a regular shift on the HU Underground in 2000. Kevin Anderson kept an eye & ear on Whiz & in 2001 asked him to join MD Illegal Rap Radio in producing & co-hosting Lessons In Jazz for WHOV. Little did he know that Lessons in Jazz would help redefine the Jazz radio market in Hampton Roads. Over the years Whiz has held various directors positions at WHOV, but nothing has had more of an impact on him then his work with Moose & Cel. Montez "The Whiz" Martin
