About Me

I'm an arts & entertainment writer based in Virginia. Currently, I'm a contributing staff writer for PortFolioWeekly and entertainment correspondent for The Virginian-Pilot. Over the years though, I've been published in various regional and national publications. The following are a very small sampling of published articles for Port Folio, The Virginian-Pilot, Style Weekly, and Citysearch.com.GordonParks ThePianoLessonLupeFiascoHemGovernorNewBelmontI edited my profile at Freeweblayouts.net , check out these Myspace Layouts!

My Interests

I love to read, listen to good music, attend spectator sports and concerts. I love quality theatre, both regional and in New York. I enjoy working out, sometimes... I thoroughly enjoy eating out, all of the time...And, of course, I spend a lot of time sitting on my ass at home writing: working on articles, my long in progress novel, or my jazz poetry manuscript.

I'd like to meet:

Since I'm passionate about arts & culture, most of the people that I'd like to meet are either artists or cultural ambassadors. I'd enjoy meeting Bill Cosby, Maya Angelou, Prince, Halle Berry and Janet Jackson...though not for the previously mentioned reason, Stevie Wonder, Angela Davis, Quincy Jones, Bill & Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Gil Scott-Heron and many, many more. As far as MySpace is concerned, I'm looking to build an online community of friends who share similar ideals and vision. People who are artists, intellectuals, social activists, entrepreneurs, and other related visionaries who seek more out of this then getting a date or mate. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but that ain't why I'm here.

Music:

I love all kinds of black-rooted music, from jazz to hip-hop to varying forms of house. Favorite artists include Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Prince, Janet, Stevie Wonder, the Roots, Common, Saul Williams, Ursula Rucker, Les Nubians, Digable Planets, Cassandra Wilson, Jason Moran, Sarah Vaughn, and Lauryn Hill.

Movies:

My favorite films of all time, in no particular order: Love Jones, Beloved, Ray, The Color Purple, Brother to Brother, Dancer in the Dark, Cabin in the Sky, Basquiat, Slam, Malcolm X, School Daze, Bamboozled, Living Out Loud, Return of the Jedi, and The Great Debaters.

Television:

I don't watch a whole lot of TV, but when I do: the Tavis Smiley Show, Charlie Rose, Oprah, reruns of the Cosby Show and a Different World. Actually, I also like My Two Cents, Muse, and whatever happens to be on VH1 Soul.

Books:

I read a lot, partially because I sometimes review books. My favorite writers of all time, in no particular order: Caryl Phillips, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Tom Wolfe, Sonia Sanchez and Langston Hughes. Contemporary authors that I'm feelin' include Colin Channer, Zadie Smith, Brian Keith Jackson, and Colson Whitehead. Favorite works include When Washington Was In Vogue, Another Country, Beloved, The Ways of White Folks, Invisible Man and Donald Bogle's Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams.

Heroes:

My mom, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, W.E. B. Dubois, Bill Cosby, Oprah, Langston Hughes, Gordon Parks, Baldwin, et al.
