Hi everyone! I'm a singer-cellist. I sing and accompany myself on the cello. I've always thought the cello is the closest instrument to the voice and I love using them together! It all began when I was nine years old.......by chance I heard a cello on the radio and knew that I just had to learn to play it. There then followed years of hard work and I was really lucky to be able to get scholarships to the Yehudi Menuhin School, the RNCM and the Royal Academy of Music where I honed my skills as a classical musician with some of the world's best cellists. After winning several prizes and getting to play to the Prime Minister as well as some royalty I realised that I was really enjoying life as a musician, and when I got the chance to play a solo with the Liverpool Phil to an audience of 3,000 at a pop festival I was hooked!At the Royal Academy I had some great teachers who encouraged me to take risks and grow as a cellist - thanks to Colin Carr and Philip Sheppard I've taken a big step into the exciting unknown. At the same time my other great love, singing, has been nurtured by the Royal Academy's fantastic Mary Hammond. Hence "Lizzy May, The Singing Cellist" came into being!My classical training gave me a really solid background and I now compose for voice and cello, supported by a range of top professional musicians on guitar, piano, double bass and drums. Drawing on our collective background in pop, folk, jazz and classical music, together we have created an exciting new sound. In the sample songs on this site I'm accompanied by the ultra-cool Arthur Lea on keyboard. I also love playing cello with other singer-songwriters and jamming with different kinds of musicians. As a cellist, I have played with acts such as: The Sugar Babes, Westlife, Kasabian, Massive Attack, Leona (winner of Xfactor 2007), and Il Divo.
