Montreal's Skyhook has already become synonymous with the blurring of boundaries and the fearless innovation of new sonic terrain. Formed in 2006 by Mikael Tobias and Adam Jenkins, the duo sought to combine their love of house, drum 'n bass and old-school funk with the dynamics and interplay of live instrumentation and real-time sound manipulation. All this while remaining respectful of a long tradition of improvisational and virtuosic standards to keep things fresh.
Wielding guitar, bass, and an array of electronics, Skyhook uses the dichotomy between organic and machine as its musical foundation. The result is a progressive, insightful and creative sonic palette with a modern compositional finesse that is rhythmically advanced, harmonically lush and texturally experimental.
Skyhook straddles the line between house DJ and electro-jazz ensemble, representing a new culture in modern dance music that is beginning to take flight: one that carefully melds compositional direction with free improvisation, Eastern classical sonorities with the aggression of rock, and the introspection of minimalism with the wild and chaotic textures of electroacoustic soundshaping.
With the release of their self-titled debut EP in the spring of 2007 and currently in production of a cohesive visual projection set to accompany their live show, Skyhook is gearing up for an aerial assault on the modern music scene. We invite you to jump on-board.
"Skyhook's crowning achievement is found in the ease with which I can compare Tobias's guitar work and tone to Jeff Beck circa Wired, or to Frank Zappa circa Hot Rats."
