Gig Guide March 1 Dave Acari + Little girl Screaming Another double headliner this week at the Moon and Sixpence as they bring nominated 'Best Solo Act' in the Indy Awards; Dave Acari from Glasgow along with the brilliant “Little Girl Screaming†from Coventry. A series of shows with Seasick Steve and the mighty Alabama3 (by personal request from the band), gigs with Son of Dave and Jon Spencer have now established Arcari as a formidable international solo performer and attracting a media reputation as a 'hell-raising National guitar madman'. Arcari’s growing reputation in the UK was endorsed in Spring 2007 when he was asked to put music to Robert Burns’ (Scotland’s national poet) poem Parcel of Rogues for a BBC Scotland special to mark 30 years of the Act of Union between Scotland and England. He also presented the entire programme, interviewing many high-profile political figures, musicians and historians along the way. Dave's solo appearances, his hard-hitting gravel-laden vocals and slashing bottleneck steel guitar make for an aggressive, dynamic blues-based sound that owes as much to punk, rockabilly and trash country as pre-war Delta blues. What a treat to then get Little Girl Screaming! A powerful indie band packed with the amazing vocal talent of singer Theresa Attwood. These guys have been on the scene for sometime and that tells with a tight and passionate set that leaves you with that “wow they we’re good†feeling. For a great free gig you know where to be!March 2 - Sounds Unplugged 2008March 7 Nordgarden + Major 45's Norwegian Singer songwriter Nordgarden is back to play the Moon and Sixpence along with John B Majors Classic “Major 45’s†night. Nordgarden entered a Sounds Unplugged night last year and proved he was a cut above the rest. Quality shines through this guy as he takes to the stage to play a set that truly leaves you wanting more. Songs that won’t leave you alone and melodies that buzz around your head for days are in store for anyone lucky enough to catch Norway’s finest export. Starting at 9.30pm Nordgarden’s window will be a brief 60minute set not to be missed before John B Major takes to the decks for a walk down the path of musical enlightenment. If a song hangs itself in the music hall of fame – You’ll be hearing it on a Major 45’s night! Another quality free night at the Moon and Sixpence.March 8 - George Borowski For me George simply oozes humble talent that pushes back the musical barrier and lets everyone in to celebrate a musical feast that we all leave very contented. Music with a message for all, delivered with a passion - George's songwriting winds its way through pop, rock, country, blue suede tunes in true rock 'n roll style, socially aware masterpieces with haunting lyrics and those lump-in-the-throat power ballads which carry that definitive GB stamp. Even if it wasn’t free it would still be extremely busy because so many people love to get along to one of Georges gigs.March 9 - Sounds Unplugged 2008March 14 Emma King & The Heartsets Emma King & The Heartsets play the Moon and Sixpence. Emma King is one of those rare finds that you hope to come across once in a while and feel privileged to have done so. With a voice that belies her 20 years, Emma has developed a strong following in the UK, Germany and the USA, particularly in Nashville, which is not bad for a girl from Hull, via Brighton, who has yet to release a record. Emma started her career at the tender age of 12 and started work as a professional vocalist at the age of 13! From an early age Emma attended 'Stage Struck' here she was given the freedom to express her vocal style and develop as a recording artiste. As well as singing Emma took part in Musicals acting and dancing at Hull Truck theatre and Northern Theatre Company. Emma has spent a lot of time in the studio over the years but loves nothing more then to perform live and put on a show to remember. Emma King and The Heartsets have been planning, writing and rehearsing with the help of their manager Mark and Martin at 1917. The gang are set to showcase their new material at The Moon and Sixpence for another quality free night!March 15 Humming Birds Blues band From Sheffield the Hummingbirds Blues Band plays The Moon and Sixpence. They know how to play these guys and always seem to please. Armed with a Sax this 4 piece bring the standards to life and throw a few nice surprises in the pot for good measure. Free from 9pm and guaranteed to get the most ridged of feet tapping.March 16 - Sounds Unplugged 2008March 21 bAd DoG The powerhouse of blues rock that is bAd DoG will be getting everyone at the Moon and Sixpence on their feet. A classic driving combo of bass, drums, guitar and harmonica is fronted by solid three-piece vocals. With each singer also taking a lead, the band provides a unique insight into the infinite variety of the blues, laid back and mellow or up-front and raw. As always at The Moon and Sixpence the music is free!March 22 Catch it KebabsThis 9-Piece band hails from Barnsley in South Yorkshire fusing together a modern twist on the ska genre; incorporating swing grooves and a punk ideology taking influence from a wide range of bands from ‘The Clash’ to ‘Glen Miller’ and all that lies in -between, a sound which they have affectionately termed, ‘swing-core ska/punk’.Over the past 4 years since their formation, the band has built up a reputation for being one of the hardest working acts on the UK ska scene, entrancing the audience with their frantic stage show and sassy live swagger. Notching up over a 100 gigs a year, the band has built up a strong and loyal fan base from across the UK and Europe.March 23 - Sounds Unplugged 2008March 28 Curragh Sons With nearly 200 years of live music between them, it’s no wonder that the Curragh Sons are the busiest band this side of the Liffy. Their influences are many, from Joni Mitchell to New Order and from the Dubliners to Led Zepplin. A mixer of such genres has given the band a Hugh following across the UK and Ireland. This has lead to such comments from the likes of Kevin Conneff of the Chieftains who said of a recent performance “Powerful stuff, powerful stuff!†Checkout the guys at the Moon and Sixpence from 9pm onwards, Free!March 29 - The Tony Auton Band The Tony Auton Band is back at The Moon and Sixpence. If you haven’t seen these guys yet then maybe this is the time to do it. I could go on about this band for ages trying to explain just how good they are, but it wouldn’t even come close to simply enjoying one of their shows. If you don’t want to be stood at the back then get in early to get a good seat!March 30 - Sounds Unplugged 20084th April Vinyl Youth + support5th April Stolen Peace + Dead Letter Society6th April - Sounds Unplugged 200811th April Cold Flame12th April AloneMe13th April - Sounds Unplugged 200818th April - Puls Puls made such an impact for their first show in November they are back again. Classic rock played so well and an eagerness to please these guys could become a regular engagement for the Moon.19th April - Kirk McElhinney When you listen to Kirk McElhinney you may see a vast selection of these influences or you may choose to see Kirk in his own right. Hooking up with artist like Jason Singh, Courtney Pine, Nick Harper, Tommy Emmanuel, Desmond Decker and Bert Jansch, has driven Kirk to believe that playing and his songwriting is what he's meant to do. Playing his music and reaching for new sonic directions to convey his passion through great tunes is simply motivation enough for this amazing singer/songwriter. When you have had the pleasure to watch a show by this amazing talented artist you'll see exactly why people are starting to sit up and take notice of Kirk McElhinney. Starting from 9pm and free is a combination for an excellent night in its self!20th April - Sounds Unplugged 200825th April - Stage Fright ~ Mojave Collective + Bill Davro And The Popes This is a brand new night full of the best cool bands you'll see across the country. Presented by Rook and the Ravens - Quality assured! Mojave Collective-Influenced by the like of The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Band, Crazyhorse, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead and The band, The Mojave Collective was formed in 2001 and have remained one of Liverpool's best kept secrets. The reputation and influence of their harmony laden alt country rock on many of today's local bands is obvious and undeniable. The roots of this band go back further still to 1995, and the The Marbles (formed by Mark who was later joined by Tommy) a 60's influenced power pop quartet that predates the "Cosmic Scouse" scene by a number of years! Incidentally, later line-ups of The Marbles included Russ of The Zutons and Edgar Jones of The Joneses.Bill Davro And The PopesBill Davro And The Popes sit happily between 'The Kaisers'(not the chiefs) and The Greenhornes (without the Hammond organ) and display great song writing talent. Check out 'Always Better' on the band's 'MySpace' profile as a fine example. The band also have in their midst one of the finest local guitar players/songwriters, Kieran Gallimore. He draws inspiration from late 50's, early 60's Rock N Roll (reverb a-plenty) and offers his vocal talent up for two songs this evening.26th April - Bobbie Peru27th April - Sounds Unplugged 20082nd May - Ernies Rhythm Section3rd May - All Schools Are Strange + Norcsaldordie4th May - Sounds Unplugged 20089th May - The Deadbeats (look out for their new name! – coming soon!!!)10th May - Nice Peter + Ivan Campo11th May - Sounds Unplugged 20085 Daze in May Festival Wednesday 14th May = Gaia + Stone Soul River + Nice Peter Thursday 15th May = George Borowski + Rook and the Ravens + Garren Frith Friday 16th May = Curragh sons + The Carbs Saturday 17th May = Atlanta Roots + Bad dog Sunday 18th May = Flaming Moes + Buswell 6 - 8pm,Tony Auton + Kirk McElhinney + Tom Western 8.30 - 12pm23rd May - Stage Fright24th May GeEkgiRL GeEkgiRL Geekgirl have grown from shy beginnings as an acoustic act into the band they are in 2007 - a true outsider punk outfit cherished by a generation of Manc music misfits.
