About Me

Q: What do Harold from Neighbours and John Fowles have in common? A: They are the chosen faces of new Adult Bookstore songs. Our new album cover might be the cast from neighbours acting out the interrogation scene from the Magus (of course you know what I mean).. or characters from the Magus in a Neighbours plot, such as Madge dying (or is it Madge's dubious twin?).
My personal vote for new album title is 'The Madgus', or 'The Collector (of neighbours memorabilia is Suchie)', or 'The French Lieutenant's Woman... is Janelle'. Please listen to these new songs, bearing in mind they unfinished, unmastered symphonies at the moment, and let us know what you think. Harold and John already have:
Harold: **noise of jowels wobbling** These are the best things since being pious and heterosexual old man accomodation sharing!
John Fowles: Wow, I thought the Magus was overwrought and complex and took forever to be finished...
Logical Bio
The Adult Bookstore are shy and ‘modest’ people. We find it hard to articulate ourselves verbally, so when asked, “what kind of music do you play?”, we mumble, um & ahh and generally don’t answer very well. Here is a non-fiction play to demonstrate how such an interaction might occur:
Anon: …Oh, you’re in a band too? What kind of music do you play?
Bookstore: Well, um, I guess, some people might say ‘art-rock’ or ‘experimental rock’…
Anon: Oh, so like disco-beats?
Bookstore: No.
Anon: Oh. (looks away for new conversation opportunity)

As a loose guide, suppose everyone was given ‘rock quotient’ (RQ) of between 1 and 10; an RQ of 1 represents a grandmother or someone deaf, an RQ of 10 being a vicious internet music critic, and so on. Here are their post-gig answers to ‘What does the Adult Bookstore sound like?”
RQ 1: very loud (grandmother) / exceptionally handsome (deaf)
RQ 2: horrible
RQ 3: too weird
RQ 4: yeah, like, it was OK
RQ 5: like Radiohead
RQ 6: like Mars Volta (usu. Due to no other point of comparison)
RQ 7: prog (usu. Derogatory)
RQ 8: that was epic, man, yeah (usu. Stoned)
RQ 9: art-rock, experimental rock
RQ 10: N/A
Breakdown – Loud? Yes, but not exclusively. Weird? Yes. OK? At least. Radiohead? Sure, Radiohead influence everyone. Mars Volta? No, they’re a bit silly, but it’s not an insane comparison. Prog? We’ll have to cop that, but there’s no goblins or concepts or lutes, and we were born in the ‘80s. Once an entire interview seemed devoted to getting us to admit to being prog, as though it’s an awful thing, akin to being a necrophiliac. Which it almost is. Epic? Fuck yeah, our music is like a journey. Once we had to extend a song by half an hour to satisfy Exeter (who still owe us $270 - pay your artists!) set-length requirements. Art-rock? Yeah, we kind of like that, but no one is sure what ‘art-rock’ is (see non-fiction play). Experimental? To a degree – we still use regular chords sometimes, but it seems what we think of as normal is somewhat skewed. Or we just use ridiculous chords in the first place, which leads onto the subject of our…
NEW ALBUM
We’re working on a new album, which will be our first actual full length. Listen to some new songs on this very page by not pushing pause. Our previous release, Beard:stroker, was a dense guitar-packed thing which did reasonably well given our promotional apathy. 3D were kind and Robbie Buck used the word ‘weird’ three times in one sentence before a Triple J spin. It eventually sold out of Big Star, which rocketed us to 6 on the Awesam charts 15 months after its release.

Peas, corn, temperature-altered air blowing from machines, the ocean, and pumik stumpt.

For the first time ever I've been myspace surfing and it's bewildering. It's inspired what looks too be the virgin bookstore blog, unless thom's writing a simultaneous one right now and beats me to it...
