Shopping In Finland is an acoustic psychadelic alt-elvin folk band made up of Aphrodite (Effie) Zsuzanna Raptis, Dakota Dafydd Dubnik, Nils Hemminge and Diego Raptis. Their instruments include acoustic and electric guitars, bass, mandolin, and sometimes drums. Shopping in Finland is part of the folk movement that has been taking hold of San Francisco. Their sound can be likened to that of Crosby Stills Nash and Young or Big Star. Effie and Dakota site them as two of their main influences along with Led Zeppelin, Magnetic Fields and Fred Neil.
Shopping in Finland has played live shows from the Reno/Tahoe area down through San Francisco and are currently recording. In lieu of their upcoming album they are seeking to establish themselves in the Bay Area as one of San Francisco's premier Folk acts by way of their live show, which some have said is "refreshing" and "not to be missed". Shopping in Finland's on-stage chemistry is both magnetic and tangible.
Each member of Shopping in Finland contributes their own unique facet to the band's sound. Effie's understated voice is unique and intense. Her lazy singing style is reminiscent of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and some have claimed her voice to be "a warmer take on Stevie Nicks". Co-lead vocalist Dakota's strong, soulful voice perfectly expresses the emotional intensity of Shopping in Finland. He treads the line between silky and gritty vocals and is often described as being David Bowie and John Lennon's "vocal lovechild". Dakota and Effie's voices blend and dance together like whiskey and cream. Effie's guitar style is driven, intense and complimentary to Dakota's jangly and melodic style - think Neil Young backing Johnny Marr. Nils, the vocal backbeat of the team is a gifted harmonist. He lends an essential layer of vocal warmth, which anchors the band and gives them their CSNY quality. When the time calls for it, Shopping in Finland is joined by Effie's younger brother Diego on drums.
Shopping in Finland enjoys peppering their live performances with songs in languages such as Swedish, French and Welsh. They also include covers of songs by crowd-pleasing artists like: The Beatles, Prince, ABBA and Iggy Pop.
