Vision:
this is viral. is a Wilmington-based organization dedicated to the creation, production and representation of non-traditional art exhibits and performances. The diversity of our projects range from fine art exhibitions, to film production and book publication. From exhibiting fictitious artists, distributing Arbitrary Art Grants and publicly protesting work, this is viral continually examines, challenges and produces an array of conceptual and non-commercial art.
Mission:
this is viral. believes that all people hold the capacity to express themselves through art, and that self-expression and our ability to communicate through art is what defines us as human. It is a mission that does not end at 5:00 p.m., or if we run out of money, or get old, or move to a different city. We want to know why our culture celebrates shallow idols and even emptier ideas. Why a society that prides itself on freedom and independence consumes so much junk. We believe that the arts hold the cultural salvation for our minds and our cities, and that the current model of art in America is lifeless and ineffective.
What critics we are!
We have a strong suspicion that the modern art world has lost it's rudder and no longer holds a grasp on the fundamental purpose of art, that it rarely celebrates the courage of a new idea, that it intentionally segregates itself from popular culture (not to be confused with hip culture) and as a result made the art world boring, uninspiring and pretentious. Of course this is just an opinion, and we might be entirely mistaken. But just in case, we founded this is viral.TM to serve as a vehicle to explore, experiment and challenge the idea of what art is, who it should serve and exactly what defines an artist.
