Our Bodies Ourselves

Empowering women with information

About Me

Maybe you read me in a women's studies class. Maybe you saw me in the waiting room at the doctor's office. Maybe your mom sheepishly shoved me into your suitcase as you were packing for college. Maybe you saw women examining their vaginas with mirrors and wondered where they got the idea.
For over 36 years I've helped women make informed choices about their health by providing truthful, straightforward information on everything from sex to body image to reproductive rights. I inspired the women's health movement back in the day. Nowadays I'm still working to break down the barriers of sexual, social, and economic inequalities with my newest edition.
Yeah, these are pretty large barriers to tackle, even if I am over 800 pages long. But now there's a nonprofit named after me! Some of our projects include working with women's groups all over the world to help adapt and me into culturally appropriate formats (ranging from workshops to booklets) to distribute in their communities. Currently, we are working with women in Israel, Nepal, Nigeria, and Turkey, among others. We also do a lot of outreach to the media to ensure that there is a counterpoint to the distortions and misinformation of commercial interests (We are one of the few women’s health groups in the U.S. that doesn’t accept funds from pharmaceutical companies). To read more about our organization, check out our website here .
And since I can't go more than 10 minutes without providing helpful health information, check out the Our Bodies Ourselves free online resource center for a searchable database of health information, health news, and free excerpts from my chapters by clicking here .
We've also created a women's health blog to keep track of current events--check out some of our postings in our MySpace blog! Stay tuned for more updates!
