Gareth Davies

Principal Flute-London Symphony Orchestra

About Me

Gareth Davies was born in 1971 in Guildford, England. He graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a first, the highest marks in his year and the Laurie Kennedy memorial prize. Shortly after leaving college, he was appointed Principal flute with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra where he stayed for five years. During this time he recorded the Nielsen Concerto for Naxos with Kees Bakels. In 2000 he was asked to join the London Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute. In 2003 he recorded all of the pieces ( over 150 !) from the Associated Board Grades 1 8 syllabus with pianist John Alley which are now available on 12 cds. As well as playing as a guest with other British orchestras, Gareth enjoys working in schools as part of LSO Discovery and is in demand as a visiting professor in most of the London Music colleges. This summer, Gareth will be travelling to Japan to give a week of masterclasses in Tokyo and also to the Stratford International flute Course. In 2004, he gave the world premiere of Quirk, a concertante for flute, piano, percussion and orchestra by the composer Karl Jenkins. This was written especially for him and the LSO to celebrate the centenary of the orchestra. He can also be heard on many film soundtracks with the LSO. Most recently, Star Wars-Revenge of the Sith, Nanny McFee and the next Harry Potter film The Goblet of Fire. You can also hear him playing Chinese and Indian flutes on the soundtrack to Around the world in 80 days and As you like it. In his spare time, he enjoys writing music and playing with his three children. Gareth plays Yamaha Flutes. www.lso.co.uk
