Jazz
Laura started properly focusing on jazz singing in sixth form at Chethams School of music. She had had some classical training when she was younger but felt that jazz/soul/funk was the direction she wanted to go. She sung with Chethams Big Band and studied jazz with Steve Berry and also started singing with a band formed at school. They have carried on to be called 'naima'...check out myspace.com/naimatheband. Originally playing jazz standards Naima are setting out on a bit of a soul/funk journey, to add to their solid jazz basis. Laura sings and also plays jazz flute with the band.
Now at the RCM she sings with the Royal College Big Band directed by Charlie Beale and appears at the jazz nights held there. She studies jazz flute with Andy Paniyi and jazz singing with Angela Elliott. She sings with jazz trios at various events and also with the pianist Alex Ho as a duo. Laura has taken part in masterclasses with Ian Shaw and Anita Wardell and was also invited to sing with Liane Carroll at the Blue Jazz in Hastings.
