Street Musician

About Me

I'm a Systems Analyst for the State of Texas by day and a street musician at night, playing a diatonic two row accordion (also called a squeezebox). I play on the streets of Austin and at festivals - mostly original tunes and European folk tunes. I am half of Street Squeeze, so if you've been to Austin, you may have seen me playing with my music partner, Pete. Check out the website: http://www.streetsqueeze.com. Also, check out the Street Squeeze myspace page. We aren't the best accordionists in the whole wide world, but we have the most fun!! I am an internationally acclaimed New York Times Bestselling Author! No Shit!!! I wrote a short story called "The Accidental Accordionist" and it's included in Marlo Thomas's book, "The Right Words at the Right Time - Volume II". ..

My Interests

I like accordions, melodeons, squeezeboxes mostly....I read a lot- autobiographies and biographies and lots of fiction. I love horror and romance. The two genres just sort of go together, don't you think? I like strange movies, foreign films, bizarre people, amusing myself, and listening to folk music. I mostly like things that amuse me and make me laugh. I'm interested in traveling around with a backpack and my accordion - busking in other countries. I'm interested in people - looking at them - talking to them - and watching them. Everything I do that I like - I do to excess. If I find a tune I like - I'll listen to it hundreds of times. If I find a food I like - I'll eat it everyday for months. If I read a good book, then I buy up all the books that author ever wrote. When I like something, I go whole hog. If I find a musician I like who has been around for awhile, I buy up every CD that's out there. I love cool electronic stuff - my iPod, my laptop, my cellphone. I think I'm going to buy an old castle in the center of France - maybe one built in the 1400s, when I collect my lottery winnings. I like people who don't think they are god's gift to the earth. I like people who don't brag about how much money they make or what powerful jobs they have. I like creme soda, black licorice, expensive chocolate, real butter, flaky homemade biscuits, pecan pie, blueberry pie, strawberry-rhubarb pie, delicious chocolate cake, buttercream icing, really good brownies, all kinds of fudge and pralines - the crispy ones. I really love homemade bread pudding with sauce, rice pudding and tapioca. I like fresh asparagus, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, butter lettuce, juicy tasty homegrown tomatoes, summer squash, honeydew melons and cantaloupes, fresh berries and ice cream. I like Chinese food, Mexican food, Thai food, Greek food, Italian food,....well, just about all of it. I'm switching over to a vegan diet and one with no processed foods, so most things I really love, I'll have to give up. I changed my diet at th beginning of August, and so far it's been easy. I like dogs and cats and raccoons and possums. I like a brisk autumn evening with the smell of burning leaves in the air. I like to sit out on the patio in the middle of the night with a good friend, drinking a glass of wine. I like to hold hands. I like to wear bright colors - vibrant. I mostly wear tie dye shirts when I'm not working my day job. I like to be around people who want to laugh and have fun. I like to listen to people tell me their life's stories. I like it when someone who is talking to me looks right into my eyes. I like it when someone shakes my hand and holds on tight - none of those half assed hand shakes for me. I like it when good friends smile when they come upon me and want to hug and kiss me. I like comfortable shoes - birkenstocks or earth shoes. No pointy toed high heels for me. When men start wearing pointy toed high heels, I might rethink my decision to not wear them anymore. Same thing with the heavy makeup - when men start slathering it on their faces to cover up the real person - I'll do it too. I only wear makeup when I absolutely have to. I like a clean house, a special spot in my house for me and my stuff. I like flowery things - furniture, clothing, pictures, dishes.....everything. I like feminine things. I like getting real letters and packages in the mail. I like it when my neighbors stay away and mind their own business. I like it when people pass by my house when they are selling something. I like it when religious folks pass by my door. I used to be a Jehovah's Witness, so I know my bible backwards and forwards, and I don't need a sermon from anyone. I like it when all my appliances work like clockwork. I like it when people I love are all healthy. I like nice specialty soaps and powders and creams for when I take a shower. I like Knowing by Estee Lauder and I like Chanel No. 5. I also like Ambush and Tabu from the 60s. I like it when I find no stray hairs growing anywhere. I like moisturizer. I recently found these really cool candles that you light and let the wax (not wax really) melt, and then you pour this hot wax on your body and rub it in for a most delicious feel. They can be found at www.skinnydipcandle.com. I like my Sonicare electric toothbrush. I like walking down the stairs. I like living plants inside the house. I like writing stories. I could have written erotica, but I chose to be a state employee instead. I like it when people don't ride on my ass when I am driving. I like it when I go to the grocery store and they actually have everything that I need. I love Whole Foods. I like music festivals when it is not hotter than hell outside. I like it when a man opens the door for me - building doors and car doors. I like him to help me on with my coat even though I can do it perfectly well myself. I like him to pull out my chair and help me sit down in a restaurant. No shit. I really like this. I would never be with a man who did not do this. Chivalry is important to me. I like a good thunderstorm with lots of thunder and lightening. I like knowing my children have good homes and people to love them. I like acoustic guitar music. I like real people. I like to have a good time and I have a wicked, sick and twisted sense of humor. I laugh at the most inappropriate times and sometimes I laugh out loud when I am all alone and just thinking of something in the past that was funny to me.

I'd like to meet:

People from the past whom I've never met - time travel.... and I'd like to meet again people from my past who passed through my life and went their own ways.
..

Music:

Any accordion music - preferably diatonic, but I like the rest of it too. Also old folk music and new folk music... a little bit of country, a little bit of rock, some pop music, classical piano and strings....,My tastes are eclectic and span many decades. I like "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" and "Wherever You Are". I do like melodic music. I don't want to listen to chaos.....there's enough of that going on out in the world....I prefer a melody that makes me smile.

Movies:

Harold and Maude, Miracle Mile, Gummo, Clerks, Bridges of Madison County. Bad Taste is a favorite. It makes me laugh every time I see it. Pink Flamingos gets me going. Napoleon Dynamite, Monster, Dahmer, Amelie, I'll Take You There, Bread and Tulips, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Sweetie, Dead Alive, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Office Space. Little Miss Sunshine, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman and Spinal Tap. All of those make me laugh out loud. I also like movies where everyone is going to die and the world is ending. I saw Ed Gein on IFC, and I found that movie interesting since it's true crime. I had a friend who was threatened by her parents when she was a little girl if she was naughty. Her parents would say "Ed Gein is going to get you". I like a lot of foreign films - from almost any country. Female Trouble - a John Waters' film from 1975 really got me going. Mail Order Wife was really good, and I thought it was a documentary instead of a mockumentary....blew me away when I figured out it was fake. It was so well done. Another one I like is From Dusk till Dawn. I always do enjoy seeing a woman dance with a snake. Saw Once more than once at the theater.... great movie!

Television:

South Park, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Weeds, Reno 911, Trailer Park Boys. I didn't watch TV for years when I was teaching myself to play an accordion, but I've started watching again, and I need to STOP IT!!!!!

Books:

Replay - it's this great book about this man who dies when he is middle aged, and he wakes up and he's back in college - so he lives life again, but knowing everything from before....and he dies again at almost the same age he died before - and wakes up again over and over.....Presently reading "Skinny Bitch". I think everyone needs to read this one.

Heroes:

My mother and father.....they made it through my growing up years. Old friends who lived through all my pranks and shenanigans and still want me as a friend...
