IT IS WHAT IT IS

About Me

Jovol Bell is a native of the city of Angleton in the “BIG” State of Texas. He is the son of proud and supportive parents, Minister Judy & Overseer John Bell, and is the 4th PK of 4. This Young, Fresh, Soulful, and Unique, Drummer has a sound that is just as “BIG” as Texas that’s sure to captivate your heart & attention. Influenced by the music of the past, yet motivated by the music of the present, He is inspired to give his contribution to music for the future. Jovol is now ready to ignite the world with his passion for music, and his love for drumming. He started playing drums at the age of 5 in church. His formal study of music and introduction to Jazz began at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas at age 18 in 1998 under the leadership of Professor Richard Birk. Birk saw that Jovol possessed a unique talent and he took a special interest in him. It was Professor Birk that helped him to discover that he could attain a career in music. He encouraged him to just stay focused and be willing to make great sacrifices. Birk took Jovol to his first ever major event, IAJE ( International Association for Jazz Education) in New Orleans. In 2000 he encouraged Jovol to audition for the IAJE All-star Big Bands. That year he performed at IAJE with the Community College All-Star Big Bands, and also again in 2001.Jovol went on to continue his Jazz studies with a full scholarship at Texas Southern University, (TSU) in Houston, Texas. He played the drums in the first ever HBCU (Historically, Black, Colleges, and Universities) All-Star Big Band 2002 at IAJE and was awarded a citation for Outstanding Musicianship. He shared the stage with the legendary drummer, Ed Thigpen, and up and coming Jazz-Artist Sean Jones, also performing for Bernard Purdie, Gerald Wilson, Ron Carter, Terri Lynn Carrington, and many more…Jovol is currently studying at the prestigious, highly accredited, Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts, where he is majoring in Professional Music. Jovol has his own unique approach that’s derived from a plethora of drummers, whose influences are evident in his musical talent. From the power and speed of Dennis Chambers, to the finesse of Vinnie Coluita, and to the soulful playing of Ralph Peterson, Steve Gadd, and many more. Jovol’s playing reflects the history of drumming along with the artistry of all music from Gospel to Jazz, from Salsa to Hip-Hop... You name IT & Jovol can play IT!His infectious fusion of Hip-Hop & Straight-ahead Jazz, produces a unique old-school feel with a new-school sound for both yesterday’s & today’s listeners alike. Because of his boldness, strength, and tenacity, he is described as a “Young Musical Lion”, by his peers. In 2003 Jovol & long time friend, lead guitarist Mike Fageros, began the inception of their fusion trio “EVO”. In 2004 they recorded their first album” Mars In October”, first with bassist Kato McKay who moved to LA ,and then completed the recording with bassist Dlover Axel. “Mars in October” is available on MikeFageros.com. Currently Jovol and Mike are working on a second project.
