Galwegian Julie works as a singer, a composer and as a songwriter. Her debut album '13 songs' won 'Irish Album of the Year - Choice Music Prize' in 2006 and was released to rave reviews in Ireland and the U.K. (The Choice Music Prize is Ireland's version of the Mercury Music Prize). See reviews and features on www.juliefeeney.com She plays nine instruments and sings all of the vocals on the album which was self-composed, self-produced and self-funded. She has composed instrumental music for the Crash Ensemble and has orchestrated and conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra strings. She is currently composing and recording her second album after an extremely busy 2007. This will be her first album with Sony BMG (U.K.)
She orchestrated '13 songs' for the Ulster Orchestra at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast in May with which she performed solo for 2000 people. See here for a video link to one of the songs http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/atl/omb_julie.shtml The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster.
Check out a podcast of an hour long feature on Julie's music December 2007 on RTE Radio 1 Mytunes at http://www.rte.ie/radio1/mytunes/1172890.html
One of Julie's shows in Cork at the Spiegeltent was filmed for TG4 and her Kinsale show was featured on 'JK Ensemble' on Lyric FM radio with John Kelly. In July she performed at the Galway Arts Festival in 'Slat' as a performance artist with a Japanese Botuh dancer and 3 musicians.
She has also performed at the Eurosonic festival in Holland (nominated by 2FM) and at the Italia Lovewave festival in Florence. She did a show in Covent Garden in London, and performed on Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4. She also performed a live session on BBC Radio 6 with Tom Robinson and she made a video directed Maria Mochnacz for the song"Aching" which can be seen on www.juliefeeney.com
She received a 5 star review in the Evening Standard in London for her live show at The Troubadour. She was No.1 Critics Choice that week for her mini-tour of London, and in Time Out magazine she also received an excellent album review. As well as the Troubadour she played at the Cobden Club, (Hitsheet showcase), the Ginglik, The Luminaire and the Spitz. Her contemporary classical composition 'The Tail Is Wagging The Dog' composed for the 'Crash Ensemble' in which she performed, was premiered in Dublin and broadcast on Lyric FM. The following week, as part of 'Blue of the Night', a concert of '13 songs' was broadcast live on Lyric FM from the Sugar Club in Dublin . She won the Irish Tatler 'Woman of the Year Music and Entertainment Award 2006', and performed on numerous RTE television and radio shows hosted by John Kelly, Dave Fanning, Ryan Tubridy, Philip King and Myles Dungan among others.
Enjoy 'Fictitious Richard', the video which she made in 2005 before she won the Choice Music Prize, featuring her favourite car ever, the beetle. On www.juliefeeney.com see Julie's art-work which is taken from her album sleeve.
Julie has her own label, mittens, through which '13 songs' is now licensed and released in the U.K. through Sony BMG (U.K.) imprint Red Ink. Mittens (who is actually deceased) is her mother's favourite cat. She subsequently took her name for her own label even though mittens died before she was born. So mittens is now the home for '13 songs' See www.mittens.ie After signing she was able to pay back all of the money she borrowed to make her debut album and first video.
Graduating from Trinity College, Dublin in 2002, she worked as a professional choral singer and composer. She has performed and recorded all over the world with various ensembles on numerous cds, dvds and broadcasts, and her own concert compositions have been performed in Ireland, and the U.K. She has composed music for contemporary dance productions and also for 2 short films. She is self-managed.
