Many DJs claim versatility as one of their major selling points, but in most cases this means they can spin both House & Techno, or Drum’n’Bass & Jungle. DJ/Promoter David Appleseed aka Shards has mixed all of the above & more..... in fact, if there’s been a sub-genre of electronica emerge in the last 10 years worth playing, chances are Shards discovered it before anyone else in Brisbane, championed it before many in the rest of the world understood it, and could tell you who the Tea Boy was in the studio on the day your favourite track was recorded!
All of which would amount to nothing if he didn’t have the skills to mix it with the best in the business- but as his sound has moved over the years from Progressive, Nu-School Breaks & Tech-House at the turn of the century as fireSprite, to the Drum’n’Bass, Dubstep & Glitch Breaks of Shards today, he has also racked up a list of support slots as impressive as his Encyclopedic memory. Nick Warren, Teebee, Concord Dawn, Future Prophecies, MidiMiliz aka Extrawelt, Eat Static, OTT, Shpongle, Tipper, Caspa & Skream are just some of the leading lights David has shared a stage or DJ booth with over his decade-long career- playing events like this year’s Rainbow Serpent Festival , Earthcore Global Carnival in both Victoria and Queensland for the past 3 years, and Infected Mushroom’s 2006 Australian Tour. Bookings from interstate to perform with the likes of PsiDream & Motion for the No Frills Crew in Sydney, and Mindscape for Melbourne’s Broken Beat Assault have also become regular additions in David’s calendar.
His seemingly fanatical devotion to explore globally & expose locally the most innovative forms of electronic music has seen Shards become one of his hometown’s most valuable promoters. In 2001, his generation2K & SOL Productions successfully broke Progressive Breaks legend Phil K to Brisbane audiences; and 5 years later did it again with Tech-House doyen Omid 16B. His fixation with the futuristic Tech & Acid-driven Drum’n’Bass emerging out of Europe & the US saw him form a local promoter collective to bring acts like Black Sun Empire, Evol Intent, Chris.SU & SKC through Brisbane in 2004 & 2005- on their way to becoming the renowned D&B powerhouses they are today- as well as UK heavyweights Calyx & Dom & Roland. But perhaps his proudest achievement is uniting promoters & punters alike in Private Audience ventures to secure bookings for Techno Internationals James Holden & Vince Watson, when their tours of recent years would have otherwise skipped Queensland.
As 2008 unfolds, David’s energy is shared between two events- the PLEXUS Live Techno showcase, which has hosted tours of Robert Babicz, Echoplex & Aril Brikha in Brisbane & given a horde of local heroes including Segue their debut sets- and 113g@1 v@1u3 . The latter is particularly exciting, as the long-running Underground Breaks club night with past International guests including DJ Distance, Pinch & Quiet Storm is re-launching itself as a record label & touring agency for producers of Glitch Breaks & Dubstep both Australian & abroad.
In what spare time that leaves him, he moderates the Brisbane forum of Oz dance music portal www.InTheMix.com.au , and continues to work on his new performance project K!nd23D, collaborating with bellydancer Moniq to add seductive movement in the Gothic Tribal-Fusion style to Shards’ noted penchant for Eastern themes, complex rhythm & bass frequencies.
