FLIPPER Mitzi -In one drop of water are found all the secrets of all the oceans.

About Me

THE FLORIDA BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN POPULATION IS VERY SICK AND GETTING SICKER IN THE ST. LUCIE RIVER ESTUARY AND INDIAN RIVER LAGOON. OVER 855 BILLION GALLONS OF TOXIC, POLLUTED WATER IS PUMPED INTO IT EACH YEAR. WE MUST PRESERVE THE WETLANDS ALONG THE POLLUTED C-24 CANAL IN PORT ST. LUCIE.Growing public awareness and concern for controlling water pollution led to enactment of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972. As amended in 1977, this law became commonly known as the Clean Water Act. The Act established the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States. It gave EPA the authority to implement pollution control programs such as setting wastewater standards for industry. The Clean Water Act also continued requirements to set water quality standards for all contaminants in surface waters. The Act made it unlawful for any person to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained under its provisions. It also funded the construction of sewage treatment plants under the construction grants program and recognized the need for planning to address the critical problems posed by nonpoint source pollution.

My Interests

DEAD BABY DOLPHIN IN POLLUTED WATERS Amost half of the St. Lucie River Dolphin are sick and diseased with tumors, fungal growths and viral infections. Two new diseases found are lobomycosis and a tumor inducing herpes virus. Scientists and researchers are finding the dolphin to have an increased resistance to antibiotics which may indicate certain drugs are entering our waterways. They discovered flame retardants(polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDE's) used in foams and plastics in the dolphin tissue. Researchers and Scientists agree that the dolphin are getting sicker.

I'd like to meet:

Everyone interested and concerned with dolphin health and CLEAN WATERWAYS!

Television:

Below is a short video showing the polluted condition of this once beautiful river. Thank you for taking the time to care..

Heroes:

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Defender of the Everglades "There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them..." Indian Riverkeeper Kevin Stinnette pictured with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.TILL TAUGHT BY PAIN, MEN KNOW NOT WATER'S WORTH. A television series inspired by the movie, Flipper, ran from 1964-67. MITZI, the first Flipper(a female dolphin), was trained at the Santini Porpoise School, later the Dolphin Research Center, by Milton Santini. Mitzi died in 1972 at age fourteen. She is buried at the Dolphin Research Center, where her grave is the first stop on the center's public tours.Whether it's the creek that meanders through town, the lake where we fish and swim, the majestic oceans and beaches that inspire our awe of nature, or simply the glass of water we drink, clean water is essential to our well-being. We must protect, preserve and restore our oceans, rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and coastal waters, and promote conservation and better water management in the State of Florida and around the world.
