[email protected]WELL. now a little story about my thoughts and stuff...
when you meet me at a club, on the street or wherever in real life, people tend to look at me as a cute, nice, shy girl. when i am spinning in clubs, people are always impressed just because my sound is so hard (neurofunk, techy and dark dnb) and "i’m such a cutie, and how can i play such a dark sound?", and they are even more impressed of the fact that i can beatmatch (which isn’t too difficult in my eyes...). for me, it’s just normal. i grew up in an environment where i never asked myself about gender roles in my childhood. my interests back then where not focused on beautiy or barbies or girl magazines, my interests were playing the bass guitar, reading tons of books and deeply listening to music. my parents were not too happy about my interests, but nevertheless, they respected them and encouraged them. i think that’s the most important thing - also studies prove that if girls are encouraged by their family & teachers to develop technological interests, are more likely to do continue their interests, regardless of any gender roles - i never had the impression that buying music magazines as a girl (with a 90% male readership) is something special. i just did it. the same thing with starting music production on my own: i was so keen on learning how to use a sequencer, i just did it. nothing special that i am a girl doing all that stuff... so for me, all those things are normal. but for the people "outside", its special, because they maybe grew up in the same society network (whole western europe should have similar standards), but in different family situations, or different friend networks. there are so many people out there judging women just by their looks, and me, looking shy & cute & small, isnt just the best "first view" inside the dnb scene. because of my looks, i had quite a hard start getting taken seriously, just because of prejudices. i did never care too much about it, i still do not mind other people’s impressions, but what i want to do, is raise awareness of all those things... when some famous djs from london (won’t drop any names here) listen to my tunes, like them and start telling me "oh girl, you have potential. but you will never enter the circle alone. you have to work together with a man. or just start your booking agency, women have a great organizing talent. but as a single female producer you will never have a chance to enter the circle" - i get really sad. all i wish would be that women (no matter if they look ugly, cute, fat, etc) are not judged by their looks any more but by their skillz and thoughts and are seen as personalities. if they are some of the "oh my interests are only beauty & relationship talks"-kind of thing, still respect them. it was their environment that it responsible for them getting like this....
