Decided I'd rather be warm than cool...

About Me

I'm a storyteller, and sometimes a catalyst. PEOPLE happen to be my favorite entertainment, and I am blessed to know so many smart, creative, funny, thoughtful, talented people. I have an eye for what's next, and while that sometimes has me a tiny bit out of phase with "now," the future is so bright, it's hard not to stare. I used to think I knew what "creative" meant. I then discovered I drastically underestimated the concept. I'm a pretty keen observer of the creative process... Writers, artists, musicians, children with macaroni and glue. I seem to regognize genius before other people do.
I'm accepting tips on how to be kinder to myself, because that's really been working for me lately. I am happier than I've ever been. I grew up in a geek enclave atop a mountain, populated mostly by scientists. Explains a lot, really. Like: Why my own obtuseness is pretty much invisible to me... Why I LOVE the outdoors and hiking... Why ComicCon is my favorite professional activity ... Why I'm so verbal (an equal and opposite reaction to those who were so mathematical, I guess)... Why I see physics and religion as sympathetic to one another.

I work in the entertainment business, as a producer and story consultant, sometimes as a writer, when pressed into service. You can see my professional profile, below.
I love living in Hollywood, where hiking is close at hand, the Thai food is fabulous, and I can get 91X on my car radio when the weather cooperates.

Life is good. ( = This layout was handmade with love by the folks at My space or yours? Go get one!

My Interests

Pretty much everything. Except Paris Hilton.

WOULD LOVE MORE TIME FOR: Cooking for/with friends. Movies. Travel. That "Chick Lit" allegory I've been meaning to write. Will I EVER master a language other than English?! Archeological digs. Free speech. Card games. Picnics. Hiking. Kayak treks. Camping. Creating urban legends. People who think this might make a good Roadtrip Checklist... People who think a Roadtrip Checklist is for amateurs. ( =

New interests include: Elephant Polo and the Quantum Aesthetics movement.

I'd like to meet:

Generally? Forward-looking people with kindness and depth. I have a soft spot for geniuses, genuine misfits, and red heads.

NEW people. Preferably LA-based. My favorites tend to be funny, smart, creative, conscious, self-conscious, curious, and compassionate. And they tend to be subversive, but shhh... most of them don't know it. Bards of all sorts. Artists. People who create their own reality. Time travellers.

Anyone who needs a top-notch story pro. Indie film people. New media mavericks.
And if you'd like to be Friends? MESSAGE ME FIRST!!

Also, ethno-mathematicians and other rogue scientist-types... ..

Music:

Surprise... I dig stuff that has a story to it.

But I'm lazy.... I have movies upon which to focus my opinions, so I mostly let smart music pros, like Chris Douridas and the assorted Indie 103.1 musician/DJs pick my music for me.

Killers. Coldplay. Muse. Panic at the Disco. Josh Radin. Death Cab for Cutie. The Shins. Decemberists. For sheer energy? Wolfmother. White Stripes. Chile Peppers. Oingo Boingo. Depeche Mode. Nirvana. R.E.M. U2. Sublime. Echo & the Bunnymen. The Like. Arcade Fire. Cake. The The. Midnight Oil. Peter Murphy. Soundtracks: Until the End of the World. Garden State. Anything Brian Eno.
I LOVE a deep, resonant voice. Leonard Cohen, Frank Sinatra, Iggy Pop. All equally sexy.
I also love Old Blues, swing and classical.

Movies:

In no order: THE WIZARD OF OZ. LA JETEE. BATMAN BEGINS. RESERVOIR DOGS. BLADERUNNER. MEMENTO. THE GENERAL. THE HAUNTING. METROPOLIS. GREASE. I AM CUBA. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. REAL GENIUS. 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD. SOUND OF MUSIC. SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. THOSE WORKING TITLE FILMS. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. HARD BOILED. BETTER OFF DEAD. THE LAST LAUGH. DONNIE DARKO. THE MATRIX. GROUNDHOG DAY. KILL BILL 2. MOST OF HITCHCOCK. SECRET OF ROAN INISH. JEAN GABIN IN ANYTHING. SESSION 9. BIG FISH. SUPERSIZE ME. LORD OF THE RINGS. FIGHT CLUB. O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU. THE SHINING. GENE WILDER'S WILLIE WONKA...

Did I mention DONNIE DARKO? Bears repeating. Movies with stupid criminals: FARGO. PRINCESS BRIDE. BOTTLE ROCKET. A FISH CALLED WANDA.

And all the food movies: GOOD FELLAS. LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE. BABETTE'S FEAST. BIG NIGHT. TAMPOPO. CHOCOLAT. GOLD RUSH Etc.

And I'm a sucker for film history and Old Hollywood !! Silent movies with live music. Goofy old sci-fi. Gorgeous B&W movies. Technicolor. Archane movie technology. Film geek supreme.

Television:

No, thanks. So, this is ode to a pastime I pass on, thanks to the TIVO Patch. Still like sci-fi tv on disc. Who am I kidding? I don't watch any of it anymore. Wonderfalls, RIP. Firefly, RIP. I wish I watched Battlestar Galactica. I bet I would love it.

Wait? Does watching John Stewart on my cell phone count as TV?! Woo hoo!!

Books:

I read. A lot.

Books. Scripts. YOUR blog. And then are PEOPLE to read. I haven't nearly enough time for books, alas. But when I'm in output mode (writing) picking up books instantly derails my process, so I forgive myself! I still like to touch and own books. Sleep with them. It's the oddest materialistic bent for me. I devoured Malcolm Gladwell's books BLINK and TIPPING POINT, but that was ages ago. They're still paying dividends, though. Anne Rice's book CHRIST THE LORD. POWER OF FOCUS. Finally hacking away at CRYPTONOMICON. I love Magical Realism since it tends to reflect my reality. As for the other stuff, I like SNOW CRASH. FRANKENSTEIN. HEART OF DARKNESS. PARALLEL WORLDS. LORD OF THE RINGS. PALE FIRE. CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. NO LOGO. HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES. CRYING OF LOT 49. Any DICTIONARY IN ENGLISH. There are more. Many, many more. Now reading THE UNIVERSE IN A SINGLE ATOM by the Dalai Lama.

Heroes:

Jesus. Buddah. Androcles. Joseph Campbell. Albert Einstein. Carl Jung. C.S. Lewis. Thomas Merton. Ben Franklin. Edward R. Murrow. Blacklisted Screenwriters. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jon Stewart. Lenny Bruce. That British reality singer singer, Paul Potts. High school English teachers, Lois Sharp and Becky Shankland. Too many great writers to name. My sister. And my amazing 4 year-old nephew Quinn. His brain blows my mind!

Independence is a Path

My feet, shod in virgin trail runners, carried me up through the cool shade of redwoods. I didn't miss the solitude as I greeted all comers with a smile. The dappled dell is a maze of dirt and roughl...
