Hi, I'm Roza and I work full time as an Artist and journalist specialising in all matters Autism. I also give talks on Autism and creativity and have done some work as art consultant... English is my second language. I've learnt English at 19 by memorising dictionary pages - I didn't know any other way (and I had no choice as NOBODY in Britain at the time would answer to me in Russian :-)) . . . ......... I'm glad I can speak and read English fluently - it had opened up an array of useful reading possibilities with which to educate myself. One should never stop learning as learning is the only way out of the Dark Ages :-)))).... Ignorance is NOT bliss. In the words of Senagalese philosopher: "We only love what we know. And we only know what we are taught". We CAN teach ourselves ....... ...... ............................................I fronted Autism Awareness Campaign in 2007 asking British Government to support people on the Autistic spectrum, with my song "Open Every Door", co-writen with super-talented Nimal Mendis. .......................Half of the proceeds go to Autism Research centre in Cambridge - the other half - to support Autism Awareness Campaign. I've declined to personally profit from this collaboration in monetary terms because I care about the change towards the whole subject of Autism more than anything in the world (my older son is on the Autistic spectrum and as a Mother, I will do anything to better his future on this Earth)..............................Recently, I've been busy lobbying the Gov. for the need for new artist-led (art and music based) provision for people on the Autistic spectrum as a stepping stone to help them into study and work. Because we could do with a programme that works if we're to avoid crisis as a society in the near future... ........................ My family was put through hell for a year by some ignorant people in Social Services who FALSELY attributed the difficulties my son had to "emotional abuse" at home.......... I felt so down, like I had nobody to turn to...... I now know this is not an isolated incident: there are other families going through similar experiences because of the health professionals' ignorance about Autistic spectrum, especially when our kids are bright and only a little "different"........ We were initially told that our son is "too intelligent to be Autistic", which is a very ignorant statement in itself....... We were exonerated by my son's recent diagnosis of Autistic traits and poss. Asperger's (to be confirmed, they said, when he's older. He's only 8 at the moment)........... Autism is biological in nature and NOT due to any "emotional abuse". Our son has Asperger's like I do and like my Father. I've had my official diagnosis of Asperger's only 2 years ago, in March, 2006 which was a late diagnosis at 35 and I've had to literally fight for it for 3 years! ..... My GP (Family Doctor, to our non-British cousins :-) was less than helpful, saying things like: "You don't look Autistic to me.... you went to University - SO you can't possibly be Autistic.... Women don't "get it".... I bet you - you don't have Asperger's" .... ........ When I returned with a positive diagnosis of AS (Asperger's Syndrome) from the top specialist in Autism in UK, my GP just shrugged. Incidently, he's never told me what he was betting as I've won the bet and I want my winnings ..... LOL :-)) ......... Our son still has not received any help with his behavioural or socialising difficulties ...... Something I am figthing for .... I now make it my business to spread awarenes of Autistic Spectrum conditions........ I'm currently the only-known film-maker, writer, composer and FEMALE Artist with Asperger's in the UK. But I don't just make films about Autism ........ I'm also dyslexic (part of Autism) and I hear "in colour".... I'm no different to all the Moms out there - I want the best for my children and I want a safer environment for them to grow up in. I have 2 lovely boys who are MY LIFE! .... I used to feel that I don't "belong" anywhere, like I've NEVER fitted in and often wished I wasn't alive...... But that was before I discovered that I have Asperger's (AUTISM WITHOUT LEARNING DISABILITIES but NOT A LIGHTER FORM - THERE'S NOTHING LIGHT ABOUT ASPERGER'S!) and met others like me....... They are usualy very creative individuals, like Artists, composers, writers, poets, photographers, film-makers, University professors, scientists, the bright stars of maths and physics - all of them are people consumed by their creative passions. That's how I've learnt to survive, too. My creative output is what drives me and also enables me to survive and function in a sane way ...... :-) ......
All I can say is Thank God for the Internet!.....
I used to think I was the only "weirdo" on the planet (I didn't think that but that's how I was often treated) and now I find that there is an ARMY of us out there!!!!!!!.......
On the subject of AUTISM, I say, DON'T MAKE A HITLER OUT OF A CANARY: yeah, yellow Birds are "different" - it doesn't make them WRONG!.....
AUTISTIC people are "different" - it doesn't mean we are somehow less just because the WORLD DOESN'T UNDERSTAND! .. LOL :-))))))))) ............................................................
