Asperger Women

The AWA is Asperger's Women Association ~ an association of women with Asperger's & Autism and Families. Our online magazine will be forthcoming in July 2008. We would love to have you join. Women and girls are underdiagnosed. We will feature the work and lives of very successful Asperger's and Autistic Women around the world. We will also present educational articles on Asperger's and Autism as well as parenting guidance for children with Aspergers and Autism. Our childrens page will be dedicated to and by children with Asperger's or Autism ___________________________________________________________ I was diagnosed last year, at the young age of 56 yrs. I have lived a wondeful life. The diagnosis was a bitter sweet pill. My world as I knew it was totally turned upside down. I had to go through my life's history and re evaluate everything with my new information on Aspergers. The sweet part, the information of being an aspie explained the unexplainable , something I was chasing to understand all my life. After a year of evaluating my life, I can firmly state I love being an Aspie. ___________________________________________________________M any psychologists could not diagnose my aspergers, because I did not act like an aspie according to them. I, like many women, learned to hide it, after a half of century of acting like an NT (NeuroTypical - i.e. 'normal') to fit in. I had over a decade of theatre training to walk, talk, and act like an NT. I was shocked, from conferences and meetings with my psychologists who claim to be experts, that they could not tell I was an aspie, with my husband of 33 yrs by my side. He shook his head in disbelief they could not tell the signs. My psychiatrist diagnosed me. He said I shot from the hip, in the dark and did everything right all my life. All that I pursued in life was based on my search of my difference to the rest of the world. ___________________________________________________________T oo often, well intended persons create a great anxiety among families of newly diagnosed aspergers or autism, which is not necessary and detrimental. Contrary, a good team of psychiatrists and good psychologists is a must. Select the professional who works best for your family. Remember, THEY work for you!________________________________________________________ ___Noone knows Aspies and Auties better than themselves. Most of the older generation will never know what Asperger's is, or that they had it, because they are no longer with us. I have not told anyone in my family, with exception of my husband and daughter and this new magazine will be my debutante coming out party to the world as an Aspie. ___________________________________________________________A fter helping several people with their children, guiding them as I was raised and with what I've learned over 56 yrs, their children have improved dramatically. I do believe Aspie/Autie women are usually the care takers of their families, and many who are very successful in lives, have the answer to the puzzle. These Aspie and Autie Women have found the balance, and are happy and successful. I also believe these women can lead the way and to help all others who have Asperger's and Autism along with their own psychiatrists/psychologists who deal with their comorbid disorders, if any, to a long and happy life. We are proof that an Aspie or Autie life is pretty good. We are here to educate society on our lives through us, our experiences, and our successes.
