STORIES BEHIND SOME OF THE SONGS
(Give my) Soul Liberty
- A self empowering song. I wrote this in December 2005 with the New Year a few days away when contemplating on resolutions for the coming Year. My resolution was to get up and go do what I really wanted to do and take control of my destiny. Also to live life the way I know it should be rather than the way it is. I think its very relevant to everyone at one point or another. For various reasons, some seemingly very practical, we are often confined by what society at different levels expects from us, and are afraid to step out as the unique individuals that we are. I Love You
- Like most of my songs, this one is close to the heart. A song about a loved one who is unsure about your feelings. How do you provide reassurance? Those three words are said so much.
Date With the Law
- A song I wrote as a composite of a few negative experiences dealing with the police. Nothing personal or malicious, just raw expression. I wrote this after returning home in Towson from Baltimore city one evening after being pulled over. It brought back memories of a few irregular traffic stops and I just wrote it as it came to me. I've also recorded a fleshed out version of this song, more aptly titled "Mr Policeman". Oh, and I don't own a gun either and am a very peace loving guy, but it appears some metaphors used in this song have been misread and misheard by some. Such is life.

-------------------------------SHORT BIO-------------------------------- Ka-Chi's motto and calling is Soul Liberty, a term which he defines as
1) Seeking Freedom,
2) Pursuing Happiness through Love
3) Living in truth.
The honest singer songwriter cites philosopher Abraham Maslow's writing on Self Actualization when describing his theme; evidence of his deep thinking nature which is obvious in his songwriting. When you hear Ka-Chi's story, it becomes obvious to why this is so relevant to him.
Ka-Chi has lived in three continents, drawing material for his art from a wealth of cultural mixes and experiences. Music came at an early age, first as a listener from as far back as a toddler, then as a songwriter in pre teenage years when his parents brought home an electronic keyboard. His early influences ranged in style and genre from Bob Marley whose influence was heavily felt in Africa during his youth, to indigenous artists such as Afrobeat King Fela Kuti and Onyeka Onwenu.
Ka-Chi is an artist with an academic background in electrical engineering as ironic as that would seem. However as fate would have it, in 2005, music came around full circle and returned in the form of an acoustic guitar. Ka-Chi began putting his songwriting skills to work again, this time with a new instrument. His first recording, a 5 song EP titled "Soul Liberty-demos sessions" featured the critically acclaimed single, (Give my) Soul Liberty; a song that captures his theme. This debut EP was self produced and released in 2006.
The musical journey has led to a growing list of eclectic songs with a signature soulful world-folk/reggae flavor. Lyrical dexterity is the underlying strength - the ability to tell stories and deliver messages over entertaining rhythms and with such soul, are some endearing qualities of the music.
The early songs have themes dealing more so with the journey of self discovery through personal struggle and growth, and also carry messages of love, relationship, social concerns, and the occasional whimsical collection of intelligent lyrics.
Through his music, Ka-Chi shares experiences both real and fictional, personal or from an onlooker's perspective, and sometimes controversial, but the direction is always positive and inspirational, a trait lacking in a lot today's music.
Ka-Chi has performed extensively in the Mid-Atlantic area with appearances at World Cafe Live and other notable venues in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia. He has also made a number of FM radio features and his music is now receiving airplay on various stations including WEAA 88.9FM, WLOY 1620AM, and a number of internet radio and other streaming avenues. In December 2007, Ka-Chi embarked on a month long tour through the eastern half of the US covering 10 cities and received a rousing welcome at every stop. He is now working on the follow up to "Soul Liberty-demo sessions"
