Described as the "Jewish Cat Stevens" (?) and the "Thinking Man's James Blunt" (!), Dean is probably best known as bassist, vocalist and one of the principal songwriters with Australian bands O.B. City and 9 1/2 incas, and as 'The Rabbi' in the politically-incorrect musical collective known as Asylum Nation, which has been touring (or is it 'tearing'?) around the UK over the past couple of years. Since his earliest performances as a busker, playing everywhere from Adelaide (his hometown in Australia) to Tokyo, Dean has been enamoured (or is it 'obsessed'?) with the singer-songwriters of the late-60s/early-70s, and this influence has manifested itself in the songs that he has contributed to every project that he has been involved in during a musical career spanning more years than you can count on two hands (say no more...). Several years living and performing in Japan (as well as three highly successful Japanese tours with 9 1/2 incas in 1999-2001) has given Dean's songs a unique flavour, the result of blending elements of 1970s Japanese folk-pop with alternative and progressive rock genres and creating a style that is familiar and yet difficult to define. After moving to London in 2004, Dean has been further influenced by his surroundings, and, after appearing as singer, musician and songwriter on six albums with various bands, is currently working on his first solo project. The songs featured on this page are taken from 9 1/2 incas' (unreleased) last album, 'Budizitart...?', but the playlist will be updated as the new project progresses...
