A Review by Sleeping with the NME
Let me just get this out of the way so there’s no confusion about where this review is heading - The Lovebirds are fantastic. Technically the songs are simple, the riffs sound like you’ve probably heard them before and they’re not doing anything revolutionary enough to be part of a genre with a “Nu†prefix (probably a good thing) - but there’s still something about them that makes them stand head and shoulders above most of the bands I’ve heard about town.
Their grasp of dynamics is perfect, especially vocally, leading to some brilliantly explosive moments within the tracks. Their “sound†- from the crunchy guitars, sharp snappy snares and deep thumping bass all work together on top of this to create some of the most exciting music I’ve heard in ages, dirty roaring blues songs with repetitive shamanistic lyrics that really just make you want to go a bit silly.
I dare you to listen to “Rhythm†a few times and try not to get hooked. Then listen to the other 3 tracks and try again. Then watch the video, which is equally fantastic. Until I get introduced to a band that can change my mind this lot are staying top of my list. If their live show lives up to their music then I imagine they will stay there for a long while yet - expect a review late next week from their gig at the Half Moon.
Sleeping With The Enemy
The Black and White Mag Review
Independent rock from the UK. It's sweaty, it's messy, it's dirty, and it 'get's your freak on', according to The Lovebirds monster jam "Tell Me Why". This recording is the first mix of their demo, full of values that The White Stripes and The Strokes also hold in common. Girl/boy vocals introduce their debut with "Ha". This is Pavement-esque indie-rock with all the Brit charm you can imagine. "Blood & Rain" draws equal amounts Dylan and Daniel Johnston, only to be followed by the climatic brooder "Rhythm", where the female vocals take the spotlight to a wonderful result. There are deeps roots into 70's rock dug all throughout this record, and The Lovebirds maintain a geniune presence. The purely acoustic "Gonna Love You" closes Sketches with a jangly 60's throwback. It's clear that The Lovebirds are rich in talent and are finding their niche in UK's 70's-fused indie rock. This is a working man's record, and good one at that, especially for a demo.
